In a test kitchen in a corner building in downtown Pasadena, Flippy the robot grabbed a fryer basket full of chicken fingers, plunged it into hot oil its sensors told it exactly how hot then lifted, drained and dumped maximally tender tenders into a waiting hopper.
A few feet away, another Flippy eyed a beef patty sizzling on a griddle. With its camera eyes feeding pixels to a machine vision brain, it waited until the beef hit the right shade of brown, then smoothly slipped its spatula hand under the burger and plopped it onto a tray.
The product of decades of research in robotics and machine learning, Flippy represents a synthesis of motors, sensors, chips and processing power that wasnt possible until recently.
Now, Flippys success and the success of the company that built it, Miso Robotics depends on simple math and a controversial hypothesis of how robots can transform the service economy. Costing less to employ than a minimum-wage worker, Flippy is built to slip in right alongside humans on the fast-food line.

But where will the illegals work?!
This robot needs a living wage! Stick it to the man! Down with big fast food! Che now - Che forever!!!!
I guess Jeff didn’t get a gig.
Well, let’s see. I can choose an unreliable, scraggly-haired, tattooed employee for $15/hour or I can choose an “employee” who will work 24 hours a day for $3.00/hour. Which do I choose?
They will learn to code or stay in their home countries...................
But...can it spit in a cops food??
We went to a local Denny’s for breakfast early, 4 AM, on Sunday.
The cook looked like he just crawled out of a dumpster.
Dirty, wrinkly Denny’s shirt, had what looked like open sores on his arms................
Just WD-40................
$3 an hour and never permitted to go home from work?
sounds like my last job
I’m sure some union out there wants to sign him up.
When asked for a comment, the robot was silent, and continued to work...............
Maybe a little 10W-30.
Decades of economic history and economic theory both agree that labor saving devices that increase the productivity of labor have a long term beneficial effect on the prosperity of the economy as a whole and on the standard of living of the average worker.
In 1972?....................
How racist! A White robot in blackface!
The next Governor of Virginia?
But where will the illegals work?!

No problem. Flippy doesn’t mop floors or scrub toilets.
Another plus...Flippy wont spit in your food.
Will it spit oil in my food?
