At the Coffee Shop
Me | March 15, 2020 | ProtectOurFreedom

Posted on 03/15/2020 9:08:34 AM PDT by ProtectOurFreedom

I've been away from California since before Christmas. I moved to our house in Idaho, which we bought two years ago, to work on improvement projects and got back to California a week and a half ago.

I got up early today (Sunday) and decided to go have breakfast at my favorite coffee shop in Los Altos, CA (San Francisco Peninsula area not far from San Jose). I got there just before 8 and was the only customer for a while. Julie, the owner, was telling me how her business is really taking a hit.

I finished breakfast about 8:40 and was sipping my coffee. Some customers had arrived and I was reading today's news when in walks a Chinese-American couple in their 60s and sits down in the booth next to me. Julie walks up to welcome them (she nows everybody in town) and asks "How was your cruise?" Fortunately, they weren't coughing and hacking, but I quickly paid and skedaddled back home instead of lingering over a couple more cups of coffee.

Can't even eat my waffle in peace. So much for "social distancing."

Elderly, Chinese, Cruise. You won the daily triple threat!
I feel for people who have to wait on others as a job, you never know what you’re gonna be dealing with.

Have an appointment at the hospital Tuesday. When I go in and say, “yeah, was out on a cruise last month when this stuff hit,” expecting a lot of stepping back, masks, etc.

Well, the casino probably won’t be crowded. Not sure if that’s good or bad for the slot payoff odds, tho.

More along the lines of how small businesses owners are suffering economically in these times.

The closure of thousands of small businesses will have a long lasting effect and will elect the swamp puppet Joe Biden. The media did what they were asked to.

My personal policy on dealing with health workers is to treat them so well that they want to respond to me when I press that red button on my bed. Don’t think I’d want to be pulling their chains...

Julie said her business is down 70%! I was expecting a 25%, MAYBE a 50% drop. But not a 3/4 reduction. She hasn’t laid off staff because they depend on her, but she has to be hitting her savings to keep staff on board. I really hurt for her. She works her tail off, getting in every day before 5 AM to shred the potatoes for REAL hash browns which are crisped to perfection. She does all the shopping and gets the best organic ingredients. It’s been my favorite place for ages. I wonder how many vacancies downtown is going to have in the coming months.

I walked on State Street yesterday and was dismayed to see about 1/4 of the storefronts already showing various signs - “Now by appointment only” or “Closed next two weeks” or “Limit your browsing to 10 minutes.” The traffic downtown was almost non-existent at 3 pm. Normally downtown is PACKED with happy shoppers, browsers and restaurant diners on a Saturday afternoon.

Los Altos, not the low rent district. I have a construction project there in about a month. Do you have the name of this place?

I’m having dinner last night with a fried who was on a cruise with his wife last week. We’ll be shaking hands and breaking bread.

I think rstrahan was referring to the reaction of other patrons and patients in the hospital when he checks in.
