Tall Ship Pilgrim Sinks in Dana Point Harbor
San Jose Mercury News ^ | March 29, 2020 | Erika I Ritchie

The Pilgrim, an icon at the Ocean Institute, has keeled and is sinking in Dana Point Harbor.

Officials at the center were informed at 5:15 a.m. Sunday, March 29, that the beloved vessel, which served as an inspiring real-world classroom to hundreds of thousands of students and visitors, had keeled starboard — tilted toward the right side — during the night at the Ocean Institute’s dock near San Juan Capistrano.

It was not immediately clear Sunday morning what caused the ship to sink.

A boom has been placed around the ship and an inspection is forthcoming, said Wendy Marshall, executive director of the Ocean Institute.

“We are concerned it will keel more when the tide comes up,” she said.

The ship — a full-scale replica of the vessel immortalized by Richard Henry Dana in his classic book “Two Years Before the Mast” — was also a favorite during the Ocean Institute’s Tall Ships Festival. It is valued at $6 million.

What’s the fuss? Its still above water - throw some big pumps on it and it will be fine. Use some sawdust to seal the planking.

Looks like the 4-8 watch fell asleep. No bilge level alarms?

Someone was asleep.

If it wasn't the crew assigned to take care of the ship it was the "Officials at the center."

That’s why I joined the Army and not Navy although I jumped from perfectly good Air Force Airplanes.

At least she wasn’t lost at sea like the 1960 Bounty. Fifty years’ service and then swamped & sunk by a hurricane due to the captain’s incompetence, with loss of life.

“Heeled to starboard”

Heel is the aft stem of the keel.

‘Heel to starboard’ would be a command. to swing the rudder such that the stern swings to starboard.

“I hope they can get it righted and repaired.”

Me too. But, the salvagers must beware of the dihydrogen monoxide in the hold.

“Did the officials hire anyone to maintain the vessel and check it every day? “

Non-essential job.

“a pump can be expedited to the scene, by CG or commercial assistance. “

Good to know.

The RN used to do this to their square riggers during construction.
Six months or longer sat flooded, then pump out when needed.
The wood swells and plugs any leaks. Stops it sinking after the masts have been stepped.

And I'd guess some surfers....

I landed on the groin at 56th Newport Beach one day...surfing a left, right in front of that groin...

It's a good story....Never hurt anything....

Scared me a bit though...........

...had keeled starboard — tilted toward the right side...

Another example of why so-called journalists are losing respect. If you're going to write about something at least spend 2 minutes researching proper terminology. We see this all the time in virtually every MSM article regarding firearms. Here there are three errors -- or at best imprecise uses of language -- in one sentence.

In nautical terms no, the ship did not "keel over." The definition of keel over is to roll so much that the keel is visible. This ship is clearly sitting on the bottom, her keel is not visible. Tilted toward the right side...sigh. That would be a list. Rolling is dynamic, something permanent is a list. On a ship it is not the right side, it is to starboard. Seriously, 2 minutes with google and the author could have sounded so much more informed.
