Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

The false positive rate was 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's or one old fart’s life, it's worth it.

ITALY
Coronavirus in Italy, 159,516 positive cases and 20,465 deaths. Intensive care, -2.5%.

In Italy, since the beginning of the Coronavirus epidemic, at least 159,516 people have contracted the Sars-CoV-2 virus (3,153 more than yesterday for a 2% growth). Of these, 20,465 (+566, + 2.8%) died and 35,435 (+1,224, + 3.6%) were discharged. Currently the positive subjects of which there is certainty are 103,616 (the count rises to 159,516 - as mentioned above - if in the calculation there are also the dead and the cured, ie counting all the people who have been found positive to the virus since the beginning of the epidemic). The data were provided by the Civil Protection.

I’m not sure I understand what they are saying here:

Positives also increased proportionally, 1,262 in one day on fewer swabs.
It also increased in the city of Milan

The number of coronavirus deaths in Lombardy is still increasing, even if it stops at the official numbers of patients subjected to swabs: in the last 24 hours they have been 280, reaching a total of 10,901. In the previous 24 hours there were 110. “Data not so satisfactory”, says the councilor for Welfare of Lombardy Giulio Gallera in the usual press conference. Which, as regards the data - still growing - in Milan, says a phrase that throws the ball in another field: “In Milan there are still a lot of people around, as you know the controls are up to the police and to the local police. “

Denmark measures low herd immunity in blood from blood donors
Today, 03:56 PM
Apr 05, 2020

We have started measuring the antibodies blood from the blood donors, which indicates that about 3.5 percent of the healthy population in Copenhagen has antibodies to coronavirus and less than two percent in Aarhus, he says.

Henrik Ullum had hoped that the number of people with antibodies was higher. Because as it seems right now, another wave of coronavirus could potentially hit Denmark just as hard as the first.

- If we had a high herd immunity, then reopening the community is not problematic. But with a low herd immunity, there are still many who are at risk for coronavirius. The numbers indicate that we are not very far with coronavirus.

The figures from the blood banks are sent to the National Serum Institute so that they can lay out strategies for the future on the best possible basis.

FRANCE
France will not start to reopen until next month, Macron says.

France’s lockdown, which severely restricts movement and gatherings, will continue for at least four more weeks, until May 11, President Emmanuel Macron of France announced on Monday.

“The epidemic is not yet under control,” Mr. Macron said in a televised address.

May 11 will mark a major turning point in the fight against the coronavirus, he said, when schools will reopen and many people will be able to return to work.

But even as some restrictions are lifted or loosened, he warned, others will stay in place. Many businesses — like cafes, restaurants, museums or hotels — will remain closed, Mr. Macron said, and the most vulnerable citizens, like the elderly or the disabled, will remain confined, “at least initially.”

This looks like a good place to present today's installment of the proper relative comparison of COVID-19 deaths across the world.

Below are the April 12th totals for the US and select other countries. While the US' time series ends on Day 19 (which is April 12 - and is basis of the order, i.e., I sorted the data by Day 19 values), I am publishing other countries future totals/'golfer's scores' who are on hole 8 while we're at hole 4.

As noted before, the US' ranking doesn't look like it'll move too much from here on out, though Ireland seems to be slowing down (it must be because of Bono) and perhaps we'll trade places from time to time with Switzerland. But it's unlikely we'll best Luxembourg or Cyprus or Portugal or Denmark. True, they have less than 10MM citizens per country, but German seems to be doing something right.

Meanwhile, Sweden's 'hands-off' approach hasn't yielded material gains in saving lives on an adjusted basis, though they haven't torched their service economy.

GA
ATLANTA — Georgia reported 13,612 cases of COVID-19 and 480 related deaths as of 7 p.m. Monday.

According to the Department of Public Health’s coronavirus daily status report, the 13,612 cases are up from 13,305 cases and 462 deaths reported at noon Monday.

The department reports 2,702 people have been hospitalized due to coronavirus; however, the governor’s office staff has said the number is likely behind actual hospitalizations.

Only two Georgia counties have not reported any cases.

More than 57,000 Georgians have been tested for coronavirus.

The Georgia State Public Health Lab has conducted 3,750 tests, with 722 positive results. Commercial labs have conducted 53,256 tests with 12,583 positive results.

Despite early warnings that individuals older than 60 are most at risk, 60% of Georgia’s cases are people ages 18 to 59.

A couple of places I’ve been watching are Singapore and India. India has gone from under 500 cases 10 days ago to 10,000 today. My concern there—beyond the obvious human concern—is that a lot of the drugs we don’t get from China, we get from India. We should keep an eye on them.

Singapore was noted at the start as the best system in the world. They were doing a great job—and their announcers deaths are still in single digits. But they had more than 300 cases reported today. That is quite a pop.

One of the things I remember from the first month or so was to “watch Singapore...if they cannot hold it at bay...no one can.”

I still think we are not over the hump on this world wide. Africa explodes next.

Most of the deaths in Mass are in the nursing homes. The local Vets home (state run Verterans facility) lost 30 last week. It has really been sad.

Yeah, I read a couple of concerning articles on Singapore today... they started weeks before the US, and have had precise contact tracing and testing from the very beginning

It is a very bad sign indeed if they can’t contain it.
