Edward Jenner (1749 - 1823)
BBC ^

In 1796, he carried out his now famous experiment on eight-year-old James Phipps. Jenner inserted pus taken from a cowpox pustule and inserted it into an incision on the boy's arm. He was testing his theory, drawn from the folklore of the countryside, that milkmaids who suffered the mild disease of cowpox never contracted smallpox, one of the greatest killers of the period, particularly among children. Jenner subsequently proved that having been inoculated with cowpox Phipps was immune to smallpox. He submitted a paper to the Royal Society in 1797 describing his experiment, but was told that his ideas were too revolutionary and that he needed more proof. Undaunted, Jenner experimented on several other children, including his own 11-month-old son. In 1798, the results were finally published an

Have no symptoms, and I worked in a very public(DFW airport) area, handling luggage and such, during when wuhan virus was spreading in December and January.

You all can get mad at me, but I believe that I am part of herd immunity.

Jenner was a remarkable man

You gave zero idea if you are part of herd immunity. When you take a titer test then you might be able to make that claim

Zero idea? During a busy holiday season and January with much public contact from people coming all around the world, I’m surmising that I have herd immunity.

Notice that it is nursing homes where people are shut in that the virus does its worst.

If I’m wrong you can come to my coffin and point your finger.

JMO, time to shut down the quarantine and get this economy back on track.

I wonder if we swabbed Rachel Madcow’s cheek and ran it through a Polymerase Chain Reaction to multiply her DNA could we turn it into a vaccine for Trump Derangement Syndrome?

Jenners placebo group was the general public.....time and lots of reports of HCQ helping greatly may win grudging acceptance for its use in Covid19 treatment.
I mean 50 000 Frenchman can’t be wrong. At least old school Frenchmen.

I think you’d be more likely to detect a serious case of rabies.

Sounds like Fauci may have had a British ancestor.

Since you apparently work in the business you need to be honest about this.

Jenner got lucky. He made an observation and decided to roll the dice on a hunch. Not unlike Trump and hydroxychloroquine. Pathogens were not well enough understood for him to even be certain WHY this worked.

We are extremely unlikely to stumble into a COVID-19 vaccine in this manner. Indeed there are no guarantees one will even be found at all. Witness Tony Fauci and his failed thirty year quest for an AIDS vaccine.

That is not to take anything away from Jenner and his place in the history of science.

I think the Royal Society gave an award that year to a doctor who bled his patients with leeches.

It's the difference between a discovery and an invention.

How the heck did you come up with that one? There’s some snakes in your head, but I like it.

That’s not how herd immunity works. As I said when you take a titer test I’ll believe you had it

What’s your point??

Scientific achievement is often the result of mistakes (the transistor) and negatives that led to something else

If that were true Tony Fauci would have this cracked inside of a week.

Cowpox led to Smallpox vaccine so, I thought, Madcow might lead to TDS treatment. I might have prions in my neurons...

Jenner got lucky. He made an observation and decided to roll the dice on a hunch.

Medical advances have often been the result of keeping an open mind. Alexander Fleming could have just tossed the spoiled sample away and we might not have had no antibiotics for another several decades. Barry Marshall noticed that most patients with Ulcers carried the bacterium Heliobacter Pylori in their gut and treated himself with the bacterium. The history of medical advances is rife with examples of doctors who thought outside the box. Were Fleming and Marshall lucky ?

All quite true and valid.

But the odds that an apple is going to fall from the tree, hit a researcher on the head and he’s going to say “Ahhh…..COVID Vaccine!” are longer than the .017% chance you have of dying from this disease.

Fauci is a big govt hack. He doesn’t do science
