Cost of filet mignon plunges by 40% to lowest prices in 10 years after steakhouses close due to pandemic lockdowns - as fears grow over meat supply chain

Top-shelf meats such as filet mignon have dropped to their lowest prices in a decade as steakhouses across the country are shut down due to nationwide lockdowns. The coronavirus pandemic has seen the value of prime meats typically sold in restaurants and steakhouses plunge nearly 40 percent due to a decrease in demand. At the same time, the cost of simpler meats like ground beef and ribeyes have surged as customers flock to stores and stock up food to wait out quarantine orders - and the prices will likely keep rising due to meat packing closures. 'The March 20 to April 17 period saw price increases, but they were more muted. Tenderloins, typically bought at restaurants, plummeted,' Gary Morrison, a reporter who tracks the meat industry at commodity research firm Urner Barry, said to CBS.

I bought a 10 lb box of king crab legs at Costco. I read the price of crab dropped due to lack of demand from restaurants. I paid $25 per lb.

Meat was in full stock but there was a limit on how many packages you could buy.

I haven’t seen much drop in prices at all.

Can someone give me a before and after in their area?

I’ve been surprised to see supermarkets in MA still having some empty shelves. It’s not really a big deal, but some items are still hard to get. I don’t see this pandemic as a true crisis. I don’t think people are still hoarding. I think people have stocked up but are now probably maintaining what they have, not increasing their stores. Does anyone have 600 rolls of toilet paper? 10 pounds of yeast? 100 boxes of pasta?

And I don’t see why supply chains are imperiled. I do understand why the lack of demand from restaurants could ripple through the food supply in various ways. But overall, I find it odd to see some shortages.

Ainsley airhead was on faux new just this morning scaring the masses about the coming meat shortages. Thanks, now the locusts will wipe out every meat counter just like they wipes out the TP aisle.

Gotta keep ‘em scared.

Everything here has gone up a buck a pound and I don’t see no dayum filet mignons. Of course restaurants around here consist of burger joints and convenient stores that have pizza and sandwiches. That and a few mom and pop places, none of which are fancy.

Of our three grocery stores, one’s not doing a weekly ad and the other two have gone from several pages to one or two with hardly anything worth a crap on sale. Technically one still has 5 pages but 4 of them are booze. That used to be less than half a page. Good time to start a rehab center.

My Costco was missing the following:

Ground beef (fresh)
Sirloin (fresh)
Ground beef (frozen patties)
Ground beef, grass-fed (frozen patties)
Gluten-free chicken nuggets
Chicken patties (frozen)

All nonsense.

I read a day or two ago that the US has something, what was the number, on the order of, thousands of TONS of frozen pork loins in storage.

The meat-cutting plants closed down, are primarily for pork.

The rest of the issue is that the packaging is different for shipment/sale to stores, vs. restaurants. The vast quantity of food sold through restaurants, and the sudden shift to everyone eating at home, means they don't have enough packages; and there's the little issue of shipping: scheduling the loading of trucks, and existing contracts with different trucking companies for taking stuff to restaurants vs. groceries.

This is all Chinese (they own Smithfield) / George Sore-Ass / Bill Gates (he's pushing non-animal imitation meat with AlGore) / Nancy Pelosi (crash the economy to elect Hillary when Joe Biden gets dementia) bullshit.

Meat demand has not fallen, only restaurant demand for meat. There is no reason for a supply chain issue. I’m forced to be grilling steaks and ribs more often myself these days, but my meat intake has not changed.

They needed to do that to thwart off a panic buying spree that was being initiated via MSM and SM by the Deep state.

I wish I saw it that low. Back in late January, Walmart had 1 lb. chub tubes of 80/20 marked down to $2.89 and I bought 20 of them and filled a freezer basket.

But I don’t remember the last time I saw 80/20 at $1.99!!! I wish I shopped near you!
