GALLUP, N.M. —
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has authorized the lockdown of Gallup at the mayor’s request.
The governor will invoke the state’s Riot Control Act, which will authorize her to enact further temporary restrictions to stop the spread of COVID-19 in that city.
The order goes into effect on Friday at 12 p.m. and will expire on Monday at noon.
The lock-down will order all roads into Gallup be closed, businesses in the city will close from 5 p.m. to 8 a.m. and vehicles can have a max of two individuals. Residents are ordered to remain in their residence except for emergency outings for essential healthy, safety and welfare.
“I recognize this request is unusual and constitutes a drastic measure, and the emergency powers set out under the Riot Control Act should be invoked sparingly,” said Mayor Louis Bonaguidi. “However, the COVID-19 outbreak in the city of Gallup is a crisis of the highest order. Immediate action is necessary.”
“The spread of this virus in McKinley County is frightful,” said Gov. Lujan Grisham, “and it shows that physical distancing has not occurred and is not occurring. The virus is running amok there. It must be stopped, and stricter measures are necessary. A problem in one part of our state, with a virus this dangerous and this contagious, is a problem for our entire state. The imperative for all of us to remain home and physically distant has not changed. It is even more crucial for New Mexicans in the northwestern region. But what is happening in the northwest could happen in any part of our state. We must remain vigilant.”
As of Thursday, McKinley County had 1,027 reported cases of COVID-19. That is more than 30% of the state's total positive cases.
Gallup has close to 50% Indian population and their immune system doesn’t appear to be able to combat the virus. Native Americans have O type blood for example

Yeah we spent a night in Gallup. While were eating dinner at one of the better restaurants you had to put up with a different NA coming to your table every 5 minutes or so hawking jewelry from a tray. It got real old.
If the Chinese Virus is capable of laughing, it’s laughing its corona off! What a show! Humans’ leaders suddenly turned into controlling fascists. Millions of humans suddenly stripped of liberty and autonomy. It must be more fun for the virus to watch than killing people!
Any lingering thoughts I had of “Land of the free,” “America, land of liberty,” are now gone for good.
The woman getting a threatening visit from the police for knowing that her daughter was playing with the family next door, was the final straw.
Or was it the old couple sitting in CHAIRS on the beach, told they could not sit in CHAIRS? I don’t know, but the last few weeks have been an eye-opener for me. Or the old folks moved from one old folks’ “home” to another against their will (as if they had the strength to protest).
Because obesity and diabetes runs rampant on the reservation. Indians have a very very slow metabolism. This is the reason for their classic intolerance of whiskey and alcohol, and very high intoxication rates. They don’t burn my office fast. Same for a modern hi sugar and flour diet. So not just being obnoxious here, but Indians are absolutely overwhelmed with diabetes. The whole county is a comorbidity zone.
We know someone who used to work as a doc in Gallup. WuFlu is the least of Gallup’s problems.
Weekend population of Gallup swells many times over as people come to town on weekends to shop for supplies. Thousands of Navajo and Zuni would put themselves at risk. It should be the hot spot to stay far away from, not be drawn to as in ordinary times.
