WASHINGTON — The US Veterans Administration will not replace three tombstones of soldiers who fought for Nazi Germany inscribed with swastikas in its military cemeteries, calling them “historic resources.”
A group that advocates for religious freedom in the military on Monday called on the VA to replace two World War II-era POW headstones in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in San Antonio, Texas, inscribed with swastikas inside a German cross, and the phrase, “He died far from his home for the Führer, people, and fatherland.”

Most are the graves of POWs that died while in our prison camps. In the Hampton VA cemetery are the graves of German U-boat sailors whose bodies washed ashore when their boat was sunk.
Wrong. Confederate Veterans are provided head stones by the VA. They are a different shape from U.S. Veterans headstones to distinguish them from the graves of U.S. Veterans.

Hermann Goring had the same idea.
Captured allied airmen were kept in camps run by the Luftwaffe. Goring knew the English had more German pilots captivate than he had allied pilots.
He had the Luftwaffe camps run in accordance with the Hague and Geneva conventions.
If you had to be a prisoner of the Germans, you wanted to pull your time in a Luftwaffe prison.
Sometimes the Germans went to unusual lengths for downed allied pilots.
Douglas Bader was unusual in that he had lost both legs in a crash while doing aerobatics. He was discharged from the RAF in 1931 but when tensions started up in the late 30’s he was cleared to fly with prosthetic legs.
When he was shot down on August 9th, 1941 he lost one of his prosthetics bailing out.
The Germans got word to the British that Bader had been captured but was short one leg. Hermann Goring personally personally signed off on a plan to have the RAF drop a replacement leg for Bader. The RAF successfully performed Operation Leg on August 19, 1941.
If the Germans had known how much trouble Bader would be they might not have bothered. Bader was such a prolific escapee that he ended the war in Colditz Castle where the worst offenders were kept.
They certainly are historical references. They also tell people who stood for what. If they were removed then wouldn’t see how this was a fact. There were people who went to their graves with someone paying to have that put there because it was who they were, was wanted to be put there. Wanted enough someone paid for it to be put there.
I know. It is my understanding that the regular German army was not involved in as many of the atrocities. The worst stuff was usually done by the SS and such.

A lot of them joined the French Foreign Legion after the war. ................. The Devil’s brigade, served in the early days of Viet Nam. Many fought against the Russians on the eastern front. The French put them to use, and kept them from being turned over to the Russians for war crimes. The Afrika Korps boys enjoyed America, and our southern fried chicken. They were pre Russia captives. Basically nice guys and happy to have been out of the war. No SS troops in Afrika if I remember correctly, Rommel wanted no part of them. I had a discussion with one of them at our local Mercedes dealership about 20 yrs ago. He came back to the USA to live in FLA. There is a cemetery in the St Pete area where some of the Devil Brigade are buried.
We had PW camps in the farming areas of FLA. They were used as farm laborers during the war, as were many others in our southern tier. The die hard nazis were kept in separate camps out of the way with lots of wire and guard towers. I am sure there are many more graves out there.
I guess we ran out of war criminals so now we are after graves? 75 years ago who is left? Maybe they are hiding at the south pole, or the moon base? What have we learned from history other than it keeps repeating itself and man’s inhumanity to man continues.

He’s an infamous wanker. The Swastika was a religious symbol for it’s creators in India before it was desecrated by the sicko Nazi’s. I highly doubt that the Germans lying beneath it today saw it as religious at the time. It was more likely political.
There was a swastika on the facade of the church Hitler attended as a child.

There is actually a very nice German Cemetary in Normandy not far from the American Cemetary there. It’s well-kept, but of course, doesn’t get nearly the number of visitors the American cemetary does.
Especially Stalag 13. ;)

100% CORRECT. = ONE really BIG difference is that there is a FEDERAL LAW from 1914 that states that CS veterans ARE US veterans & are to be treated with the SAME respect & veneration as every other AMERICAN ex-GI.

Fyi, for over 20 years, I ran the CSA Memorial Ceremony at ANC, until I retired & never had a single problem.
(Btw, one of my main assistants at the ceremonies was a Black man & a 33rd Degree Prince Hall Mason, who is a direct descendant of a CSA Sergeant from GA.)
Further I am the SOLE person who is allowed by DC city ordinance to fire ARTILLERY memorial salutes in Washington DC.
(Since retiring, I “temporarily appoint” another person “to act in my stead” in January of each year.)
