Don't Buy the Misleading Figures. Here's the Real Story About How the U.S. Matches Up on Coronavirus Deaths

The sheer ease with which the American left has politicized the deaths of thousands of Americans has shocked even me. The United States is approaching 100,000 deaths and the left seems determined to make sure the public blames President Donald Trump for those deaths. As PJM’s Tyler O’Neil noted, the Democratic Coalition is trying to make “Trump Death Toll” a thing. While Tyler effectively demonstrated the absurdity of blaming these deaths on Trump, I’m going to show that despite the headlines that suggest things in the United States are the worst in the world, that is emphatically not the case.

First, let’s take a look at the total confirmed deaths of the ten worst-hit countries in descending order (based on the numbers from the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University as of 9:30 am ET May 24).

  1. USA (96,046)
  2. UK (36,757)
  3. Italy (32,735)
  4. Spain (28,678)
  5. France (28,218)
  6. Brazil (22,013)
  7. Belgium (9,280)
  8. Germany (8,275)
  9. Iran (7,417)
  10. Netherlands (5,841)

But, here’s what happens when you adjust these numbers per capita. The following countries are arranged in descending order by their coronavirus death rate per million people (based on population data from The CIA World Factbook).

  1. Belgium (791.76)
  2. Spain (573.38)
  3. UK (558.95)
  4. Italy (524.58)
  5. France (415.90)
  6. Sweden (391.87)
  7. Netherlands (338.01)
  8. Ireland (309.86)
  9. USA (288.74)
  10. Switzerland (226.80)

It makes an amazing difference, doesn’t it? The United States dropped from number 1 to number 9 once you adjusted for population. Oh, but wait! I’ve previously documented how the United States’ coronavirus numbers are skewed by downstate New York. So, here’s the same list as above, treating downstate New York as a separate country from the rest of the United States:

MORE DATA DIVE FOR PERSPECTIVE:

  1. Downstate NY (That's New York City and suburbs for you) (1,771.86)
  2. Belgium (791.76)
  3. Spain (573.38)
  4. UK (558.95)
  5. Italy (524.58)
  6. France (415.90)
  7. Sweden (391.87)
  8. Netherlands (338.01)
  9. Ireland (309.86)
  10. USA sans downstate NY (233.44)

Once you separate downstate New York from the rest of the United States, it jumps to the top (by a long shot), while the rest of the United States is at the bottom—barely edging out Switzerland.

It should be noted here that several countries are reportedly undercounting both cases and deaths, including Iran, China, and Russia. It’s very possible that the actual case and death numbers for these countries are much higher, possibly even putting them in the top ten, but without reliable data I can’t correct for this.

Yup, the few times when I’m not fast enough to mute or turn off when the “news” comes on the hour, this is one of the enemedia’s fave claims.

And, I stand by my prime rule of the multiverse: Math is NOT a friend of progressives. Science is right there with math.

I think at least half of the downstate NY numbers are fake. Hit by a bus? Probably COVID-19.

Washington State: 5 gunshot victims reclassified as “covid deaths”
Colorado: alcohol poisoning reclassified as Covid

Those are just the times they got caught. The Chicoms cooked the books to minimize it, our ‘rats are doing exactly the opposite

Bookmarked. But the democrats media will, as usual, ignore this inconvenient information.

It will be interesting to break out New York City and its suburbs in CT, NJ, PA - perhaps going down to Philadelphia as well - comparing that collective bunch with the rest of the world.

Yes. And if that doesn’t work (and it wont) they will try to blame him for the economic collapse they have caused.Their obscene irony has no limit.

I support our President and have suggested he now come down hard, without qualification, for reopening the economy; and to deploy the Justice Department in all first amendment cases on mandated church closures by tyrannical Blue State governors. Even the CDC has agreed such closures violate the Religious Restoration Act of 1993 and has denied any such recommendation.

These governors have also exceeded their limited Emergency Act powers extending those limits without legislative authority. In Washington state, my own and neighboring County officials, have filed a lawsuit in Superior Court to open on that basis as our Governor, Jay Inslee, has twice exceeded his authority in denying our petition to do so.

UK\Italy\France\Spain\Germany have more deaths = 106,445, than the U.S.

That’s assuming the reported deaths were actually caused by COVID 19 -

The data from NY is suspect, at best.

I know someone in the lab of a major hospital near me. They have greatly ramped up testing, but are only getting about 5% positives.

The pandemic is winding down, regardless of how we’re loosening restrictions.

I’m convinced if lefty governments decided to ‘help’ with seasonal flu, we’d have at least triple the fatalities.

As of May 21, the census defined NY Metropolitan area had 445,880 cases, 36,040 Covid-19 associated deaths with deaths per 1M population of 1866. The rest of the US had 1.175,022 cases. 60,314 Covid-19 associated deaths with deaths per 1M population of 194.

Numbers from Worldometers and John Hopkins

Put in another way, a small area of the US with 6% of the population had 37% of the Covid19 associated fatalities!

LOL. Just ignore the fact that cases are now growing outside of the 15 metro areas so that now new cases and deaths are increasing in the rest of the country. This is not over yet.

Taking it one step further. Take out NYS,NJ Conn. and Mass. and you have 11% of the population with 50% of the deaths.
We shut down the country based on the northeast corridor death numbers. That group is way over 1000 deaths per million.

Excellent analysis. Excellent post.

Freepers need to understand the significant differences between NYC / Downstate New York and the rest of the United States. The worst place to live anywhere in the world.

This is the best summary I have seen on that subject.

While it is well past time to reopen our country I really don’t know how it is going to go in NYC. Those people are in a league of their own. I’m afraid it is going to be slow and painful for them.

Same with never Trump drudge. They continue to talk about the USA having the highest number of deaths without providing the per capita context. Clearly they are doing it on purpose.

So, here’s the same list as above, treating downstate New York as a separate country from the rest of the United States:

That's silly.

In order for this exercise to have any validity you would have to remove each of the countries' hottest region and rank it separately.
