Some series I have enjoyed. Croatian,russkies,chinese,lord-knows-who or what.
This Russian series is based on the book, once considered a serious danger to the future of the Soviet Union. “Life and Fate” is an epic tale of World War II and a reckoning with dark forces emerging, including Stalinism. With Hitler and the Nazi army looming on the Front, the series takes us deep into the hearts and minds of citizens and soldiers struggling to cope with the ravages of war.
Good battle scenes. Alternates between Stalingrad and the home front.
Black Sun. Set in 1938. 3 corner war over the opium trade in the “Kingdom of the Serbs and Croats”. Violence and sex. Everyone corrupt. Turks v. Russian army in exile v. yataghan slum lord. cops in the middle.
A reclusive but fearless detective is sent to the borderlands to solve a cold case. He will discover the place has as many dark secrets as he does.
Czech police v.montenegrin mafia. Modern times. Really well done. good characters.
In season 2 of “Fury”, Major Furin investigates the murder of a journalist, Kalashnikov. He faces a new deadly sporting drug, which may approach the market. Furin can’t bring a charge against the pharmaceutical company management, but when his close friend and a woman close to him die, he goes to extremes for revenge.
Subtitles are a bit wonky. Modern times Don’t mess with Fury!
Thanks for the info.
When they stopped having the Sopranos for free with Prime I had to check into detox :)
Qin Ming (Zhang Ruo Yun) is an eccentric medical examiner who has an unusual way of doing things. When Ming is given a new assistant with Li Da Bao (Jiao Jun Yan), he figures it’s only a matter of time before she too quits on him. But Da Bao proves herself to be made for the job and able to discern the smallest details that help in investigating a crime.
Some light propaganda. It is pretty funny and the gross parts of autopsies and bodies found are not glossed over.
I watched THE BATTLE OF SEBASTOPOL about sniper Ludmilla Pavlichenko the sniper. Also NIGHT SWALLOWS about the night witches, BATTALION, and CARAVAN HUNTERS.
all on amazon prime. All Russian.
The russkies again. Acme Corporation (THE Acme Corporation?) tries to improve women. What could go wrong?
11 people wake up inside a cool cold war soviet bunker. Escape and find things have gone very wrong in Moscow.
The battle of Sebastopol was very good and Battalion was an interesting bit of history. Look up Admiral Kolchak on Prime. The woman battalion commander was executed for fighting with Kolchak, last head of White Russia. Decent series.
Last, but not least and probably the strangest and funniest thing I have watched lately, “The Benza”.
2 dudes in Japan, who seem to be a cross of Jay and Silent Bob with Dumb and Dumber are looking for the last third of a magic toilet seat. Japanese subtitled. Their Japanese language teacher is hot and weird. There are ghosts, scooby doo parody and general madness. Indescribable.
TG for the internet and cheap phone rates. If this was 25 years ago, I’d have gone nuts!
I’d watch it if I had some blotter acid.
The Benza? I’m hoping for more episodes.
I’m in the middle of “Night Swallows”. I also enjoyed the series “The Dawns Here Are Quiet”also Russian.
You might also try a russian wartime movie called “The Edge” The trains are cool. the one guy tries to get an old abandoned locomotive up and running. Set in a labor camp, I think.
It’s August 1945. Former tank crew member Ignat, who is very passionate about locomotives, gets back from the war to the faraway village called the Edge (Kraj). 2010
A top Israeli agent comes out of retirement to hunt for a Palestinian fighter he thought he'd killed, setting a chaotic chain of events into motion.
Look up “A French Village”. A really good French TV series, set during the occupation in WW2. Eight seasons, very thought-provoking.
Try Fallet on Netflix - Swedish and English very, very funny parody on dark crime shows. Have watched it about 4 times.
