June 13, 1860. The Press and Tribune, Chicago, IL. The Radicals of New England: Wendell Phillips says, “there are no States South of Masons and Dixons line – nothing but hordes of pirates, and that it is the right of the slave to slaughter with revenge the slave holder.” To a few, these [Anti-Slavery] meetings are meetings to “give testimony” against the sin of slavery. Of these are Garrison and some of the whitest souls not yet translated. – column 3. The Elgin Republican Wide-Awake Brigade will have their uniforms ready by next week. – column 6. Lincoln and Seward contrasted – Lincoln speaks in a few well-chosen words, which go far enough to say just what he means, but not so far as to commit him beyond his intention. Terse is the term which describes his language. – Seward affects startling expressions. He exaggerates the truth, and has often been compelled to waste much labor in the defense of some ultraism … Such was his “irrepressible conflict” idea. – column 7.
