Here’s why this is the earliest summer solstice in over 100 years

Summer is coming early this year, and it has nothing to do with this week’s scorching weather in the Twin Cities.

The summer solstice takes place on Saturday at 4:43 p.m. CDT, making it the earliest official arrival of the summer season in 124 years. On Saturday afternoon, the sun’s rays will be directly over the Tropic of Cancer, the farthest north they’ll go all year.

As the Earth orbits the sun, it wobbles around on a 23.5-degree axis, giving us seasons as the Earth tilts towards the sun at varying angles. The Twin Cities’ northerly latitude (the 45th parallel, marking the halfway point between the equator and the North Pole, runs through the Twin Cities’ north side) means the Earth’s tilt is felt more strongly here than in places closer to the equator.

This year’s summer solstice — again, that’s the northernmost point of the sun’s direct sunlight — will be the earliest since 1896. That’s thanks to this year’s leap year.

Ask Hank Johnson. He’ll probably tell you it’s because too many damn Marines are on one side of Guam, and it knocked the earth off it’s axis.

19 Jun: Climate Depot: Study Finds Warming in West Antarctica Is Due to ‘Natural’ Climate Variability – Not Humans – Media Ignores Study
Ten days ago the journal Science issued an embargoed press release about a forthcoming paper that suggested the warming observed in West Antarctica was due to natural climatic variability...
Overall, it’s a fascinating paper especially given the concern about the region’s ice decline leading to present and future sea level change. But unless you look at two or three specialised outlets you won’t have heard about it.

The embargoed information from Sciencejournal is normally released four days before the embargo is lifted on Thursday evening UK time. Thousands of journalists around the world see it as Science along with Nature are the world’s leading science journals. So why is it that no mainstream news media covered this important story? It’s not as though there were any other pressing environment stories to eclipse it...

Of course; but the article didn't address which specific policy of the Trump administration is responsible for it. The question remains whether increased use of fossil fuels accelerated the Summer Solstice more than withdrawal from The Paris accords.
If Covid-19 hadn't reduced greenhouse gasses Summer would have come in May.

And the one in 2024 will be even earlier. And the one in 2028 will be earlier than that. And so on until 2096.

The Tropic of Cancer runs near the FL Keys / Cuba and is the northern limit of the wobble.

My question is : how high (or low) does the sun appear in extreme northern climes like N. Canada, Sweden, Alaska, etc. I’ll assume the sun hugs the horizon “overnight” offering a nice twilight affect, and then rising mid-day during “working” hours-—perhaps in the 30-40 degree range above horizon.

Curious in sun-baked AZ.

On the Arctic Circle today the sun will go between right at the horizon at midnight to 47 degrees altitude at noon.
