Likely active volcanoes found on Venus, defying theory of dormant planet

Scientists have identified 37 volcanic structures on Venus that appear to have been recently active - and probably still are today - painting the picture of a geologically dynamic planet and not a dormant world as long thought.

The research focused on ring-like structures called coronae, caused by an upwelling of hot rock from deep within the planet's interior, and provided compelling evidence of widespread recent tectonic and magma activity on Venus's surface, researchers have said.

Many scientists had long thought that Venus, lacking the plate tectonics that gradually reshape Earth's surface, was essentially dormant geologically, having been so for the past half billion years.

"Our work shows that some of that interior heat is still able to reach the surface even today. Venus is clearly not so geologically dead or dormant as previously thought," said Anna Gülcher, an Earth and planetary scientist of the Institute of Geophysics in Zurich, and lead author of the research published in the journal Nature Geoscience.

Just add water and some lightning, and VOILA! instant life forms

LOL

Mining water in the outer solar system and delivering it to Venus' gravity well until, in a liquid state, it would cover the surface with an average depth of 10 or 20 miles would help cool it down over the next centuries or couple millennia. The larger problem would be to get it rotating prograde at some reasonable pace. Pursuant to this idea, it would be a good idea to build a density map (Earth's is referred to as the Potsdam Gravity Potato) and slam Venus in just the right spot to push the heaviest part into the axial location. Then add the water.

Well, there it is: a tourist attraction for the political class. ;)

I read that what makes (made?) Venus inhospitable was
the absence/loss of a magnetic field, which resulted in its ‘good’ atmosphere giving way to its current hellsh atmosphere.

With a surface temperature of about 900 degrees, volcanoes don’t have a big effect.

That's odd.

Scientists can give you a detailed geological history of Venus and yet they didn't know about these active volcanoes. You can read it on Wikipedia.

They allegedly know EVERYTHING about the planet as fact including how it was once earth-like but then suffered from 'runaway global warming' caused by an excess of co2. (A warning for planet earth)

They know this because of a few photos they have from probes of the surface and LOTS and LOTS of speculation to fill in the blanks.

I remember watching something on PBS about Venus. There is a theory that Venus’ crust is so thick that heat builds up in the mantle and it reaches a tipping point where the whole crust is melted and the surface is wiped clean.

Venus is a VERY intriguing, if inhospitable, place.
