Distant cosmic objects such as planets, galaxies, and nebulae are sometimes referred to by the scientific community with unofficial nicknames. As the scientific community works to identify and address systemic discrimination and inequality in all aspects of the field, it has become clear that certain cosmic nicknames are not only insensitive, but can be actively harmful. NASA is examining its use of unofficial terminology for cosmic objects as part of its commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
As an initial step, NASA will no longer refer to planetary nebula NGC 2392, the glowing remains of a Sun-like star that is blowing off its outer layers at the end of its life, as the “Eskimo Nebula.” “Eskimo” is widely viewed as a colonial term with a racist history, imposed on the indigenous people of Arctic regions. They renamed Ultimate Thule because the Nazi’s used the word. The word was used by the Roman’s for a northern-most mythical city. It is also used for element 69 Thullium. An American base in Greenland as well. Rather than renaming things that the Nazi’s used how about stomping out socialism which is what Nazi’s were?

Same here. Then I immediately thought that someone should try to change the name of Esquimalt, a city in British Columbia, Canada.
Whoops! I guess someone should whinge about changing the name of “British Columbia”, because the British were nasty colonialists and Columbia must refer to the guy who started the ‘take the land from the indians’ thing. Whoops again. “Indigenous People”, not indians. At least not feather indians. Dot indians is OK... so far.
My high school’s teams are called the Comanches. As far as I know, there has not been any effort to change that. If that ever happens, Franks would be the perfect replacement because the French settled that town in 1699, and there were never any Comanches in Illinois.
My wife’s college just changed their mascot from “The Colonels.”
Her college was Curry College outside of Boston. The Colonel was not related to the civil war, or any founder of the school. The mascot was designed like Yosemite Sam.
The comments on the Facebook page was pretty much filled with WTF? The school really did not present a case for changing it.
The mob is crazy.
I got an idea. Call the observations Klingon one two three etc and Uranus one two three etc.
Then when it’s appropriate, go Charmin one two three etc. to clean up the mess.
