Editorial: Lincoln and Slavery-Conservatism of the Republican Candidate; THE PRINCE OF WALES; THE GREAT FLOYD GUN (9/4/1860)
New York Times - Times Machine ^ | 9/4/1860

The attempt to prove Mr. LINCOLN a radical Abolitionist, which was so eagerly entered upon at the outset of the canvass, seems to lag. It is getting to be decidedly up-hill work. Even the Herald, the longest-winded trumpeter of the tribe, falters, and shows signs of exhaustion. That reliable exponent of history and constitutional law, started with the assertion that Mr. LINCOLN was pledged to liberate all the slaves by writ of habeas corpus; -- but as even the slaveholders did not seem to be greatly startled by this prospect, it has pitched its tune upon a somewhat lower key. Mr. BUCHANAN's other organ at Washington is somewhat more guarded in the positions it assumes, but its general drift is the same, -- to hold up the Republican candidate as belonging to the radical Anti-Slavery wing of the Republican Party, and as pledged, if elected, to make vigorous and effective war upon the institution of Slavery by all the agencies which his office may put in his hands. The attempt to fasten upon him the odium of such sentiments does not prosper. The most vigorous and venemous assaults of the Democratic Press do not even satisfy the Abolitionists that they have anything whatever to gain by the election of Mr. LINCOLN. In point of fact, a good many of the more zealous of them are becoming disgusted with the conservative tendencies of the Republican Party, and are drawing off their feeble forces for a separate and more satisfactory organization.

Lincoln believed that if slavery were blocked from spreading into the Territories and that as those Territories were made States, slavery would gradually be eliminated, a sentiment shared by most Republicans. Most Democrats believed that too, and that belief spurred the Fire Eaters.

It was a trade-off that Lincoln was willing to make to preserve the Union, hence the proposals he made in his First Inaugural. Modern day Southern apologists have seized on this to claim, see the Civil War really wasn't about slavery, a proposition that we have seen is patently false. But, prepare for the next attack to come from the Left and the Cancel Culture to go after Lincoln, the man who signed the Emancipation Proclamation that we all now celebrate on Juneteenth, as a racist.
