You Thought Cooking Your Turkey Was Tough? Try Maintaining An F-14!

Tomcat may have been the F-14's official moniker, but its other nickname was 'Turkey.' Seeing as many of us will be slaving away in an attempt to cook perfect turkey today, it is only proper that we pay homage to the hard working sailors who had to the cook a perfect Turkey every time- those who maintained the crazily complex F-14 'Turkey.'

The nickname 'Turkey,' or 'Turkeybird,' came from how the normally super-sleek, muscular and famous fighter looked on the catapult going through control checks or on approach to landing, when the aircraft's entire trailing edge seemed to fan out into a messy moving mass of feather-like structures. Flaps, spoilers, speed brake, slats, the F-14's huge all moving 'tailerons' and its twin rudders, along with gear doors and landing gear jutting out from the bottom, the word 'busy' is an understatement for the big Grumman jet in its most vulnerable of configurations

I remember back in the day when I was crew on an F6F hellcat at the airshow at NAS atlanta when one of the prototype F14 performed a max take off climbing straight outta sight. Most impressive.I was 16 years old and that was the wildest thing I had ever seen.

The early B-52’s left a pretty good Skeeter Fog Trail too.

While I was working at Pt Mugu, the VX squadron was still flying the Tomcat. They loved to do their carrier break right over the old hangar my office was in. 2-3 of them all hitting the afterburners just over our heads. Great fun to be on the phone when they did that. I could hear them at my house miles away at times.

Always liked the classic look of the Delta wing interceptors of the 50’s - 60’s era having spent a year providing security for F-102’s in ROK. But when I saw my first F-4 I was in love. Then, in another departure from conformity, I was again blown away by the F-111’s we had at Nellis. BTW, they had great queen sized bed sized main landing gear flaps!

The F-14 had amazing “legs” - I was was a flight test engineer, and we could count on getting a lot of testing done in a single flight. By comparison the E/F had hardly any gas at all.

The A-10 has more muscle? Not from an engine standpoint. The joke was 2 half-engines and bird strikes from the rear. I’ll give you the GAU-8 Avenger. That’s something only a mad scientist could dream up.

The early B-52’s left a pretty good Skeeter Fog Trail too.

The A through G models were all water burners. They were beautiful during Takeoff and a SAC Minimum Interval Take Off, MITO, with those birds was one of the most awe inspiring sights in the entire world.
