Out-of-state rescuers turned away after testing positive for coronavirus
SURFSIDE, Fla. – Search-and-rescue teams looked for survivors through the 9th night and into the 10th day of a delicate operation after the Champlain Towers South collapse formed a compact mountain of pancaked concrete in Surfside. There were 126 people who remained unaccounted for Saturday.

It’s nuts. Miami and the towns around there were, despite state policies, very into the masks and shutdown stuff, although they had trouble trying to enforce it. A lot of these Dem cities in Florida were very much opposed to DeSantis and his common sense approach.
Are they three buildings north checking the structural integrity of Champlain Towers-North yet?
It just said some of the members of the out-of-state teams tested positive. It’s only lunacy if there aren’t enough people. It sounds as though there are plenty of rescuers. If the rescuers have to share rooms, does it matter if they’re working outside for part of the day?
Anyone who was physically in the building at the moment of collapse has either been found...or is deceased. The question is...is that a complex where some units were left unoccupied for part of the year? Florida is much more popular in January than in June. Snowbirds tend to arrive in December/January and leave in April/May.
Not one word about Biden- if this happened during President Trump’s Presidency, he would be blamed non-stop with 24 hour coverage.
So sad for everyone missing and their families.
55 units collapsed
146 people total involved, including families with young children. This was mostly full time residential, not snow birds. Almost three people per unit.
I doubt the workers are obese 80 years with co-morbidities, so why should they even worry about the virus?
The virus has nothing to do with it. It’s in the rule book, and rules must be followed. When I tell my liberal relatives that something like this indicates a lack of adult supervision, their response is “Science! Follow the Science!”

when I look at the aerial picture of the building it appears that only a small fraction of the building collapsed. Is that really 55 units in that small portion?
thanks for the picture. Until now I just assumed that the building was sort of U shaped. I didn’t realize it was L shaped and so much collapsed.
where exactly in the building was this leaking swimming pool we hear so much about?
Its in the bottom left of the posters image, outside. There was no indoor pool. Parking was under the patio area surrounding the pool. Its standard build out in S E Fla Bch front.

It is the outdoor pool in the picture. That wasn't the only source of water. The parking deck beneath the building also had chronic flooding problems from high tides and king tides.
You can see the pool in the picture I posted. It has been reported the pool deck was over part of the underground parking structure, including the pool pump room that was leaking, not necessarily the pool itself. Additionally, the pool deck was not properly sloped or waterproofed.
While just conjecture at this point, it is thought that the pool deck collapsed first causing a chain reaction of structural failures of the building itself, the support pillars of the building were already in bad shape and it didn’t take much for them to fail.

I know this is getting away from the intent of your post but there is an excellent discussion on the collapse from an engineering point of view on YouTube. The gentleman is a structural engineer and he has a series of videos where he discuss the collapse. There’s no agenda, hysteria nor politics. As I said the pool was not “IN” the building it was on the property.
Dont recall reading where the pool was leaking, maybe you can provide that info ? The poorly slopped patio deck was leaking onto the area below and denigrating the slab and internal reinforcement which has been mentioned numerous times.
Also there was never mention of Hi Tides flooding the parking garage. Salt water intrusion below ground level is a different scenario and very real.
There was rain runoff ect flowing down the ramp into the parking garage which is common.
Many structures have sump pumps to pump this run off from a catch basin at the lowest point of the ramp.
Not sure what this bldg’s set up was.
