Apple’s App Tracking Transparency is so good, it’s driving advertisers to Android

A report shows iOS ad rates began to plummet in June.

When Apple released App Tracking Transparency as part of iOS 14.5, it posed a simple question to iPhone users: Do you want this app to track your activity across other companies’ apps and websites? Less than three months later, a new report says that so many chose no, advertisers are flocking to Android.

According to the Wall Street Journal, prices for mobile ads directed at iOS users have fallen since iOS 14.5 arrived, while ad prices have risen for Android-targeted users. The publication estimates that some 70 percent of users have opted out of ad tracking, causing the rates to plummet.

The Journal reports that online advertisers “have lost much of the granular data that made mobile ads on iOS devices effective and justified their prices.” For example, Digital-ad agency Tinuiti advertisers were allocating about half of their Audience Network spending to iOS users at the start of April. By the end of June, that number plummeted to about 20 percent.

'Google has said that Android 12 will feature a version of Apple’s App Tracking Transparency, but with so few phones getting new versions of Android when they arrive, it likely won’t affect ad rates for years to come.'

One of the benefits of Apple is the support they continue to offer phone users even years after initial purchase. iOS 15 supports phones as far back as the iPhone 6S, a phone that came out in the Fall of 2015. You can buy a $1K Samsung Galaxy and you'll be lucky to get two-years of updates.

I have an Android from Motorola. I never use it for anything other than business and personal calls, texts, and checking my emails. I rarely use it to surf the net. I have disabled tracking and location data.
I use my small laptop for everything else. And, I use my VPN at all times. I prefer the laptop with a dongle when on the road as its functionality is far superior. And, at home, a laptop is a no-brainer over a small phone.

Uh, no, Apple does not sell or market using your data, except for its own Apple products. Apple sells hardware and a little bit of high-end software. You are their customer, not their product.

Sure. Just keep telling yourself that.

One of the benefits of Apple is the support they continue to offer phone users even years after initial purchase.

I bought a new Android from HTC back in 2011 that never got a major update and was completely unsupported just 18 months after purchase. Stuck at "Honeycomb" in an "Ice Cream Sandwich" and "Jellybean" world. Most new apps wouldn't even run on it. Android was fun as a "hobby", when I installed all sorts of mods. iPhone just works, is fully supported for many years and Apple takes privacy far, far more seriously than Google.

Apple wasn’t making money on those ads. The ad developers who sell the 3rd-party apps were/are the ones making the money on ads.

There’s a reason Facebook is losing its mind over the anti-tracking features Apple has implemented with iOS 15 and that reason is it’s KILLING their ad rates because they can’t track the users anymore. Advertisers won’t pay a premium unless the app can provide solid analytics on the users.

Google gets people at both ends because not only are their own aps ad-supported. But, they’re also the ad company.

Right, which is why there’s such a thing as an ‘Apple Tax.’ Although in fairness, the Apple products using their own silicon are such a value right now, I’m not sure if the Apple Tax is as pronounced as it was a few years ago.

When you buy a Samsung or some other phone, there’s almost always going to be 3rd-party apps installed. Why? Because those 3rd-party apps are paying the phone maker (and in some cases, the carrier) to install those apps. When you buy a phone from Apple, none of that garbage is installed because that’s not Apple’s business model.

As Swordmaker says, Apple is in the ECOSYSTEM business, providing a turn-key solution for its users that focuses on privacy and security. They’re no in the ad business or the analytics business. They’re a hardware and software company. Google is an ADVERTISING company. Everything they do is to support their ad and analytics business.

Opting out of ad tracking on iOS is so popular that ad revenue on iOS devices is dropping like a stone while revenue on Android is increasing as users are quickly opting out of being tracked on ads in apps on iPhones and iPads… WIN! Apple, LOSS! Google Ads!

Sure. Just keep telling yourself that.

I don’t need to tell myself that. In over thirty years of using and working with Apple products i see the evidence they don’t do what you are claiming. I see far more evidence they do just the opposite. They do everything they can to protect the private information of their customers. You obviously do not use Apple products and have no evidence except innuendo to make your claims. We who do have years of experience of it NEVER happening.

There are a lot of apple haters on this site. Some of it I understand, but really, there is no comparison at all between the privacy of an iphone and an android.

For those of you who have iPhones, now would be a good time to go through and make sure all of your privacy settings are what you want them to be.

Go to ‘settings’, ‘privacy’, then take a quick look at each category. Mine is locked down pretty tight. I’d pay particular attention to any app that has access to your microphone and camera. Ask yourself if the app should really have that.

China not happy

In China, things have gotten so bad that The Financial Times reports that Baidu, Tencent, and TikTok parent ByteDance along with other retch companies have banded together to create “a new way of tracking iPhones for advertising” called the China Advertising ID. In response, Apple blocked several updates to apps utilizing CAID causing the platform to lose some of its support. It appears as though Apple’s gambit has worked and the project has stalled before it even got off the ground.

I believe unless you buy a ‘flagship’ Android phone even today, you’re very unlikely to get even on OS upgrade. And, unless you’re buying the phone through one of the premium carriers, you’re probably only going to get a year or two of security updates.

I had been an iPhone user since its inception. But, when the Galaxy Edge came out, I bought that because I loved the immersive nature of that (at the time) huge screen. I used that phone for 6-months and while the hardware was fine, I got sick of Android’s problems quickly including the inability to uninstall certain apps even though it was a factory unlocked phone. I haven’t bought an Android phone since.
