Simone Biles is the golden girl, interrupted, of the Tokyo Olympics.
America’s beloved gymnast announced Tuesday that she was withdrawing from the team competition following a “stunning breakdown” at the long-delayed 2020 Olympics, citing mental health issues — and not an injury — that were exacerbated by the pressure to be “head star” at the summer games.
After her unexpected departure, the USA women’s gymnastics team ended up taking home the silver medal without 24-year-old Biles, a four-time Olympic gold medalist.
However, the decision to focus on competing for her own well-being instead of medals — while jarring to many US fans — wasn’t a complete shock to some diehard Biles followers.
After a fraught performance at Tokyo prelims on Monday, Biles already seemed to be hinting at a struggle. She opened up on Instagram, saying: “I truly do feel like I have the weight of the world upon my shoulders at times.”

Only time will tell, but with our woke corporate media there’s a better than average chance they will shift into overdrive trying to promote her as brave and heroic. Afterall, she checks all the right boxes and nothing screams victimhood louder and identity politics more than a black female athlete.

She’s a selfish snowflake. She took up a spot on the team and quit when her Ritalin ran out. How many talented athletes were vying for that spot, and would have loved a chance to represent our country?

I thought Jordan Chiles was part of the regular team, but in all the articles she’d being identified as the alternate?? I guess I don’t understand how all this works

There are 4 members on the team, but in the finals only 3 compete in each of the four events. It can be a different 3 on each event.
In this case, Jordan Chiles was not slated to compete on the uneven bars or balance beam. But when Biles dropped out, Chiles replaced her in those two events at the last minute.
At least that is my understanding.

I also got the impression that she knew she wasn’t performing well; the rest of this will be virtue-signaling theater (”We need to discuss the mental health of athletes”...).

That is just it. She now gets not only the athletic endorsements, but she now becomes the mental health poster child for athletes.
Understand at that level and all professional sports levels there is a team psychologist. We rarely here about them, but they exist to help athletes’ cope at that level.
In this case it could very well be the coach and team psych failed to prepare her for not being #1 all the time. And the other half of this could very well be is it isn’t really a breakdown. The delay of even a year to which she anticipated retiring from the sport could have something to do with. But she should not have quit, it should have been her coach pulling her out.
There is a lot to unpack. But she could have retired during the pandemic, instead she thought she could mentally handle another year for the money at the end. She couldn’t.
She’ll go on to gain additional endorsements though talking about mental well being and how important it is. Never realizing or maybe admitting she neglected hers for fame and fortune. It is a high price to pay for the illusion.
The top golf pros usually have a sports psychologist in their coaching entourage. Pro golf is very unforgiving. Just a few mental errors, a few missed putts, takes the golfer out of competition. Not to mention it is very embarrassing for a ranked player to not make the cut.
I think the few mistakes she made in her fairly easy opening routine shocked her and she panicked. She feared the humiliation of failing. So she quit.
She already had her gold medals and fame. She should have quit while she was ahead if she wasn’t hungry for more. She could have used age as an excuse. I bet the lure of commercial money was the smelly cheese in the trap.
She choked. She did poorly and then quit on her team for the nation’s competition.
She was going to sit out until the individual events. Appears she was told that doesn’t work. So she announces she’s bagging out entirely.
Her teammates hate her guts. More on that to come.
