There is no “I” in “team.”

“There is no “I” in “team.””

True, but there is a “Me” in Team.

Anyway, I believe BLM and other woke groups put the pressure on Ms. Biles to be the poster child of the woke movement and she was conflicted and distracted by it. Her silver medal performance increased the pressure on her and in the end, rather than sucking it up, she just quit.

Definitely a mental health issue.

Simpler than that, is the reality that she got a case of the Yips, and can’t just shake it off.

I am giving her a break as well. The Olympics is entertainment; not a national security issue. This is why I have no interest in professional sports.

Yeah, this is why the “liberals” hate Tom Brady. He never quits and triumphed in TB! True champions don’t admire their trophy cabinet for too long!

I see both sides. I see the Isaiah Thomas 42-points-on-a-sprained-ankle/Keri Strug vault-with-a-fracture side, and I understand that if you aren’t in a perfect mental position in this sport you could end up paralyzed. Don’t know where I come down.

I still like her even though she is having a hard time like other humans.

I would have had no issue with her “withdrawing” if it were prior to the trials - we don’t need the drama, but apparently they require it.

I'm worried how this is going to affect Simone's "wear-her-leotard gay bestie" commercial acting partner.....

I built a building once decades ago for a top ranked gymnast to use as a training school. Those people are all wound pretty tight. Anxiety related depression can be a killer. I give her all the credit for a decade of being a top gymnast in world competition and being someone that appears very considerate in her public conduct.

Her supposed “wokeness” I attribute more to publicists trying to position her on the Wheaties Box.

She's no Mary Lou Retton

Biles' 2016 Olympic performance was far more impressive than Retton's 1984 Olympics (even if you ignore the fact that many top competitors were absent in 1984 due to the boycott.)

Biles' non-Olympic career is also much more impressive than Retton's.

In the vault she did the other day, she lost her positional awareness, and then was unable to overcome that in practice. On the vault, they land on that huge, soft mat and she managed to land on her feet. In other events, they land on a thin, firm mat. If that happens in those events, it could easily result in serious injury.

She could probably get over this, given some time. She doesn't have that right now. If she doesn't get over it, she's done as a gymnast.

Her teammates hate her guts. More on that to come.

I see no evidence of that. They have probably all experienced that loss of positional awareness at some point, but had time to work through it. Simone doesn't have that time, and while it's likely should work through it, given time, there are no guarantees, and she is already old for a gymnast.

It could be a temporary thing, or it could be like baseball pitcher Rick Ankiel, who, after a great regular season, suddenly couldn't throw strikes in the playoffs. He tried to work through it in the majors the next year, then in the minors. After 4-1⁄3 innings, 17 walks, 12 wild pitches, and a 20.77 ERA in AAA, he was sent to the lowest level of the minors. He found some of his control again, but also hurt his arm a couple of times and finally switched to playing outfield.

I really don't understand all this hate for Simone Biles (and thankfully, it appears to be a small minority.) She was a great gymnast who appears to have lost it, and we probably will never see her get back to the top level again. (Age 27 in 2024 - I don't see it.)
