Her teammates hate her guts because she was sucking on the team performance and pulled out entirely.

That hurt the team, end of story.

She was planning to rest up for her individual glory. Behind the scenes she was informed that wasn’t going to fly.

So she bailed entirely.

More on this will come out. It will happen.

Her teammates sure did a good job of hiding the hate (not something teenage girls are known for being good at.)

Retton was the first woman to win the all around gold medal. She was and still is hugely popular. She was also a big supporter of Ronald Reagan. She set the table for Biles by inspiring a generation of girls to take up gymnastics. 10 years from now Biles will be a name in a record book and not much else.

They’re not hiding it as it’s been reported and will again.

So. “Queen B” which doesn’t stand for bee as her teammates say will be hearing more from them.

I’ll be listening.

Yes, Retton was the first U.S. woman to win the all around gold medal (against a field that didn’t include the USSR). Yes, she was and is very popular. She also supported Reagan, not that I care about the political views of athletes.

She had 1 gold, 2 silver (team + vault), and two bronze (bars + vault). She also never competed in the World Championships.

In the Olympics, Biles had 4 golds (all-around, team, vault, floor) plus a bronze (beam). In five World Championships, she won 19 gold (include 5 all-around), 3 silver, and 3 bronze.

Their records aren’t particularly close. Retton pulled off one amazing victory. Biles dominated the sport from 2013 - 2019.

Guessing she gave up millions in income by stepping aside, so the word selfish would very difficult to use about her.
If she did stay on and attempt competition in a compromised condition, people would then bitch and moan that she was selfish and should have stepped aside and let someone else compete in her place.
It’s a no win for her.
Having said that, it sucks she’s not competing .
We all wanted to see her overcome a obstacle and triumph over it.

Holy crap! She accomplished the victimhood hat trick: Black, female and queer.

Gymnast friends say she was super-human and did stunts that would be dangerous for kids to do. When you come into the Olympics with 4 Gold, anything is going to be scrutinized. Judges saying “She can do better than that”.
Gymnasts should be one and done. An event reliant on sheer judging is not a sport. I bet she looked at the skateboard event and said “Why am I doing this and not that? Gold is gold”

Do Olympic skateboarders get the same endorsements?

Simpler than that, is the reality that she got a case of the Yips, and can’t just shake it off.

And in her sport, a screwup can result in a broken neck.

I'm not going to opine one way or the other on Simone Biles. She worked her whole life to get to where she was and then turned away and left before reaching the pinnacle. She has her reasons. She owes me nothing.

The difference, of course, being that Retton quit while she was ahead. All Biles will be remembered for is quitting.

She was repeatedly raped by the team doctor...I’d say she has every right in the world to blame men for her trauma.

I don’t blame her for dropping out, a missed step on a vault could leave her paralyzed, as has happened to several elite gymnasts.

What I don’t like is praising that decision with joy and pride, rather than embarrassment or humility.

I used to work construction and often walked the top plate while framing walls or rolling rafters, one missed step from a two or three story building would’ve given me a severe injury.

There were a few times in my career when I had to tell the crew boss that I was feeling unsure about walking the top plate, and asked if I could work on another section of the site.

He usually said “yes,” but i viewed my decision with embarrassment, I didn’t trumpet it as something brave and heroic on my part.

It’s all part and parcel of our dying Republic, though...applauding weakness and loss as something noble.

I hope she decides to compete in the individual apparatus next week, I’d love to see her perform her famous vault in an Olympics.

She truly is the greatest of all time, twists or not during this meet.

Well said.

I think also it probably would've helped if Biles had given up all the social media over the past several months.

Even before she dropped out, she seemed to be awfully sensitive about what people were saying about her on Instagram, Twitter, etc. Just shut it all down and ignore it -- for a few months before/during the Olympics anyway. Focus on the task at hand.
