Anyone who doesnt want to get in the middle of a thousand year ‘rivalry’ is a traitor to the United States.
Fine. If the Oblast simply wants to be independent will Russia respect their decision?
I am yet to see it, but generally, the UN charter says that everybody has the right to self-determination.
Then Russia would accept an independent Oblast, am I right?
Who cares? Basic civil rights are supreme to the considerations of nation-states.
The US mulled this reading regarding Kosovo and it settled, it applies to every other country, including the US itself.
Can’t answer my question, can you?
I answered it for what I know. Everybody has a right to self-determination. What is hard to comprehend?
Like I said, want a hot war with Russia? Just try taking The Crimea away.
Yes or no:
You would abide the Oblast declaring independence?
If it is explicitly supported by the majority of the population, of course. I made it clear several times.
Good.
Now what if an independent Oblast decides to join the EU and/or NATO?
For the EU I don’t care, for NATO I support the idea that it is already too large for no good reason. Although your scenario is purely hypothetical. I’d first see Southwest of the US gone.
Maybe twenty years ago I’d have been more concerned about the Mexican colonists trying to wrest control of the US Southwest back to Mexico. But now Mexico is such a mess and the Southwest has become a bastion of American independence and sovereignty.
Anyone trying to make Texas Mexican again is going to get shot, shot some more, hung, and then fed to someone’s hogs.
In any case, I am noticing you have less of an objection to the Oblast joining the EU or NATO than you do Ukraine.
Why is that? I’m just curious as to your perspective here and am not going to argue with you about it. Promise.
The same you mentioned regarding Southwest applies to Russian regions nowadays.
However, following your logic applied to Eastern Europe, the people opposing the Mexican control of the parts of the US are terrorists.
Isn’t it screwed up?
What made you think that I am opposing Ukrainian membership in the EU? I didn’t and never said it.
“The same you mentioned regarding Southwest applies to Russian regions nowadays.”
A better comparison would be the Canadian province of Alberta. Alberta was mostly settled by Americans during and after the US Civil War and to this day is the most pro-American of all of the Canadian provinces.
The people and their culture are much more American than Canadian.
This does not give the USA any right to invade Canada, occupy Alberta, and then hold elections under US supervision to decide what happens to Alberta.
I did not know you were okay with Ukraine joining the EU. Thank you for correcting me on this.
If Albertans want to become Americans, why not?
I can’t see any reasons for it because nobody persecutes them and generally Canada rates above the US per quality of life.
I can understand why the Crimeans have chosen otherwise.
