...for 14 hours, 14 minutes and 11 seconds, since setting off at sunset from Austin, Texas, in a race to Sin City. Their mode of transport was a former prop car they were told was used on the set of “The Walking Dead.” Top speed, when they could get away with it: 140 miles per hour.
“Waldo ran from us,”
The rally, called Fool’s Roll because it is held each year near April 1, is a simple concept with a maniacal flourish. ... must drive the roughly 1,200 mile trek, on any route they like, in a vehicle that costs no more than $2,000. Breakdowns, and meltdowns, are all but guaranteed.
In prior years, the detours have included a bowling game in New Mexico (scores were added to race times to determine the overall winner), a contest at an all-night shooting range and even an optional sojourn to Mexico.
Later, teams were instructed to divert to downtown Las Vegas and take a picture with a man dressed as Waldo on bustling Fremont Street.
Waldo, also known as 19-year-old University of Nevada, Las Vegas freshman Caleb Lewis, had high-jinks of his own. Not only did Mr. Lewis, who was hired by Mr. Shiflet for the job, run from some teams, he offered side deals to others. For $100 tips, he offered to disappear inside a local hotel before the next team arrived. Two teams took him up on the offer.
“Gotta make money,” said Mr. Lewis, an accounting major.

Wasn’t there are “clunker” road race year ago called LeMons ??
Sounds like a fun time.
LOL. Awesome
The 24 Hours of LeMons is still going strong. It has several races per year scattered across the country.
Given the used car market these days, they need to add a zero on to that price tag.
I bought a decent $3000 beater for my grandson, added maybe a grand in parts (incl good tires).
Now those cars are 5000+
Thanks Brandon!
No kidding. But that $500 doesn't include safety modifications such as roll cages, fuel cells, etc., so in reality nobody is driving a $500 car. But I think the rules state that the race directors reserve the right to buy any participant's car on the spot for $500.
Umm. No.
Considering that the option to return FROM Mexico is not yours to make.
referring to 24hoursoflemons ?
Have raced in it a few times. Great times.
They have a series of very funny and well done videos
I saw an eposide of “Counting Cars” where the Count’s Customs boys raced that. Looks like a ton of silly fun!
Yep. Built a car for that series some years ago.
