Walking past the countless photos of Holocaust survivors and victims at Warsaw’s POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in 2016, New York-native Daniel Patt was haunted by the possibility that he was passing the faces of his own relatives without even knowing it.
For Patt, a 40-year-old software engineer now working for Google, that sort of conundrum presented the potential for a creative solution. And so he set to work creating and developing From Numbers to Names (N2N), an artificial intelligence-driven facial recognition platform that can scan through photos from prewar Europe and the Holocaust, linking them to people living today.
Patt has a personal stake in the project: Three of his four grandparents are Holocaust survivors from Poland, and he wants to help his grandmother find photos of the members of her family murdered by the Nazis.
She was just 9 years old when the war started and fled from her hometown of Zamosc eastward with her father and siblings, while her mother — Patt’s great-grandmother — stayed behind. Her mother was shot and killed during the Nazi invasion, and Patt’s great-uncle — his grandmother’s brother — was subsequently killed when he went back to rescue her.
The rest of the family survived and emigrated to New York City after the war.
Currently, N2N’s software — which is free and simple to use — only returns the 10 best potential matches that it can find in the database available to it. Though not yet perfect the nonprofit project has already seen great success: The software has been used to search through hundreds of thousands of photos to identify faces for the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) as well as individual survivors and descendants of survivors — including a number of celebrities.

Dammmm now everyone will know my real age! LOL
I know it’s not polite to hate but I hate hate hate Google on so many levels I cant even begin to list. However, this kind of work is pretty cool when it’s applied like this way and not abused.
This could be very useful to totalitarian government agencies like the FBI.
This is very puzzling for a site that is asking for donations.
Why would anyone give money to them without any clue about what they would do with the donations ?
They already have more powerful tools... Developed for use in Afghanistan. I’m sure Biden left copies behind for the Taliban to use hunting down the families of Afghani’s that aided us.
bs meter pegged as usual.
No, it is not cool.
And if the abuse is not already being planned i would be beyond shocked, and would fire the VP who was not planning
A few years ago I found my mother, then 21, in a scene of a food line for rescued prisoners from a Japanese interment camp from WWII. My father, then not yet her husband, I have not been able to find in the footage.
Combine that with a near complete genetic database of the population. And Americans will pay you to do it too!
Ok maybe cool is not the right word. Yet if I had an ancestor who was one of the many nameless faces photographed in the camps that could be IDd with this technology, I would find it to be.......”moving”. Is that better?
Perhaps we will find if immortals exist, and have been living among us and not aging.
For anyone here interested in genealogy, I recently found a very useful tool that I would like to make known to all Freepers-It is a grave locator service that is run by the VA, and is a searchable database of Veteran Admin associated graves including all National Cemeteries, from all wars back to at least the Civil War. The URL is-
https://gravelocator.cem.va.gov/ngl/ngl#results-content
I am certain that active genealogists already are aware of this tool, but for those getting started, this is a great thing. Just search a plain surname, nothing else, and you get a list of all buried Vets, from whenever they died, AND their spouses if they are buried with their spouse.
It will be used for porn and spying for the government.
I use image search to surprise scammers and cat fishers on Telegram. People dont like it when their facade is busted.
