US to propose new rules for airline cancellations, delays

The Biden administration is working on new regulations that would require airlines to compensate passengers and cover their meals and hotel rooms if they are stranded for reasons within the airline’s control.

The White House said President Joe Biden and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg would announce the start of the rulemaking process Monday.

The rulemaking pledge continues a push by the Democratic administration to require airlines to improve customer service, and it comes just weeks before the start of the peak summer travel season.

The aim of the rules would be, for the first time, to require airlines to pay compensation beyond a ticket refund and to cover expenses that consumers incur, including rebooking on another flight, if the airline causes a cancellation or significant delay. […]

Airline-caused cancellations include flights scrubbed for mechanical issues with the plane or lack of a crew.

Airlines for America, which represents the biggest carriers, said in a statement that airlines have no incentive to delay or cancel flights. The trade group said more than half of cancellations in 2022 and 2023 have been caused by “extreme weather” or air traffic control outages. …

stranded for reasons within the airline’s control

Is that a determination of the the airline or do we get a new Federal Department of Airline Passengers Rights?

They always want to create a new executive department that gives legislative power to the executive that the executive was never meant to have.

What I want is this -
If weather/equipment/control/crew impacts your outbound - you get the “flex” reschedule treatment. You should also get a “flex” on your return - since you are now in a shorter time at your destination.

My SD to SFO flight was delayed because SFO was ‘fogged in’. As it turned out VP Al Gore was flying into Moffitt Field at that time for a fundraiser.

In those days the $99 cross-country flights made flying fun. Now I wouldn’t fly even if it was free. Those SFO-SD flights were $29. That’s why we went.

Like it or not only congress can legally pass laws under the constitution. And I don’t care what the communist USSC says.

This will result in nothing but a tax on the consumer (the traveler). What happens when gubermint “taxes” corporations? Of course they pass on the tax, via increased prices, on whatever product (or service) they produce. Does anyone in their right might believe airfare will not increase because of this?

Just what I was thinking. Perhaps the Airlines can sell 2 types of tickets. Magic Pony Class, where everything is guaranteed to be perfect. Normal Class, where you take your chances as usual, and compensated for troubles by the current rules.
