Dear Jane,
I am the mother of a bright, beautiful, friendly 15-year-old who I love very much. But in recent years, a pit of jealousy has started growing over just how talented and popular my daughter has become. I have spent much of my life feeling little more than average. I’m not ugly – but I’m not pretty. I’m not dumb – but I’m not what you would consider intelligent. I have some good friends – but popular is never a word someone would use to describe me.
My daughter, on the other hand, is spectacular. She has an enormous group of friends, all of whom fight spend time with her, she’s one of the highest achieving students in her class, and she has a confidence that most adults can only dream of.
I should be proud of all this, I know I should. But instead I’ve started resenting her for it – despising her even. And I find myself trying to put her down at every available opportunity. I know how silly this sounds. A grown woman being jealous of a 15 year old is crazy enough, but of her own daughter? But I can’t help thinking to myself: 'What does she have that I don’t?

There once was a Swiss mathematician named Johann Bernoulli who had a similar jealousy problem. He was very talented, but not as talented as his son Daniel (to say nothing of his genius student Leonhard Euler). Envy is a sad and destructive affliction.
Envy is the worst cardinal sin. It leads to all the others.
So the mother stops getting the attention, and the daughter starts. It can be, I guess the female version of the mid life crisis. Nature. What are you gonna do?
But, most parents are happy to have an attractive daughter. It certainly opens up her life options. Doctors, lawyers, successful businessmen... they are all too happy to flock to an attractive young lady. Not saying she will have a happy life as a result, just that she certainly has more attractive options.
You should hate your husband instead. She obviously got her charm, intelligence and good looks from him.
I thought Patsy Ramsey was dead? (Poor JonBenet).
In the event that it’s not, my advice would be to grow up.
Well the mother could have been much worse and ordered a female circumcision, and gave her an unworkable penis as woke mothers do now.
What does she have that you don’t?
A personality.
If this is actually real, I predict that within 5 years the crazed mother starts gender transitioning.
Rings true to me. Seen it in my family and extended family.
It can happen with dads or moms. Usually more moms though. Dads are usually not interested in peeing contests like this. If either parent is just not confident with themselves, thats when it might happen. Often having smart good looking kids are considered a plus for these kinds of people and they get status boost vicariously through their kids.
Yep! Men and women are wired differently.
Season 8, Episode 6, “Baby, It’s You,” a 2-part crossover episode with “Homicide: Life on the Street.” Might have been a stepmother. The episode summaries don’t say.
Back in the old days many people died in their 40s and fifties....the article is a partially fabricated story probably based on the fact that some mother is jealous of their child. Published for click-bait purposes.
Some people are not designed to be parents.
Queens often rule better than kings.
Oh, now. There’s a hit below the water line.
Dear Married21,
It does my heart really good to see someone whose got their head on right. God will always take care of you. Your rewards, with the eception of your daughter, are yet to come.
Thank you.
But I just thought of another one, Skin Deep, in that one a professional photographer of models is stabbed. One of his models is a suspect, and her daughter is played by Claire Danes. But I think in this one, the daughter was jealous of the mother's looks.
