A United Airlines pilot gave a heartwarming announcement ahead of co-piloting a flight with her mother and fulfilled her lifelong mission.
Brooke Patterson Van Howe held the microphone as she stood at the United Airlines Terminal Gate 76A and told passengers she would be their first officer taking them to Newark this afternoon.
'Today is a very special flight for us probably the most special in my aviation career,' Van Howe said in the announcement from an unknown airport.
Turning towards the smiling woman standing next to her, who is dressed in a matching navy blue pilot's uniform, said: 'You see this is Captain Brenda Patterson...not only is she my role model ...she's my mother.'
'From the first day I took my very first flight lesson it was my dream to fly with my mom and today that dream comes true,' as applause are overheard and the mother and daughter duo pull their luggage across the terminal towards the aircraft.
The touching touching tribute appeared a few days before Mother's Day on Van Howe's TikTok with the headline: 'Like mother like daughter.'
The video shows a series of photos of a young Van Howe with her mom.
'She raised me into the woman I am today and I am super proud to call her my mom,' she said. 'I'm very excited to share the experience with you.'

Good thing I’m too old to fly anymore...
Although having two fine looking women in a cockpit might change my mind...
Cue Jackie Gleason....Humana..Humana..Humana..
And both prolly triple poked with the geen therapee. (Hope not)
Wife and I are all but done with the waiting at airports, airline delays/cancellations, loud obnoxious passengers, etc.
Mom to daughter in the cockpit:
Did you clean your room before you left?
Did you wash your hands?
Brush your hair.
No talking on the cell phone during takeoff and landing.
Did you see that cute guy in first class?
“We jokingly changed the name of the cockpit to ‘box office’.”
LOL…never heard that before. It took me a minute to get it because I haven’t heard “box” since the 80s, maybe longer.
LOL !!! That’s funny.
Flight (((PING)))
I sense there will be a Babylon Bee story related to this in the future.
What’s that Cockpit of ? 737, 757, etc ? I see it’s twin engine. Just curious.
Tempted to make a joke here....
Looks like a 737 MAX.
Thanks, I was speculating that it was a 737-xxx because of the sheer volume of them in service.
>What’s that Cockpit of ? 737, 757, etc ? I see it’s twin engine. Just curious.<
It’s a B787-10. Tail number N13014.
EC
Looks like a Boeing 737.
Facetious, I believe.
He was being a man commenting on a pretty woman.
“I prefer QUALIFIED people flying the planes that I’m in.”
An what makes you think these two are unqualified (if that’s your point)?
How did You find out that info ?
I've had both men and women up front with their hands on the controls. Had only one problem, one time, with an excessively inexperienced co-pilot. My mental list of the five best contains three men and two women.
>How did You find out that info ?<
I’m a retired airline pilot.
At the top of the windscreen you will see a white placard “A/C 1014”. That is the fleet number for the plane.
I still have connections at United and asked him/her/them/zir which aircraft was fleet number 1014.
EC
Ok, Thanks. I saw that placard and thought it was A/C#, knew it wasn’t N#. Grew up Airline Kid/brat. Dad worked for AA after WWII. Was Foight Engineer C-47 during that. Worked Ramp/Counter/Gate in early years then Pax & Freight Charter sales after that for 52 years. Sister did 20+ in Res.
I wouldn’t want to get on a plane with either of these clowns/pilots
