Plenty of videos out there of close calls with dopes trying to take selfies with wildlife. How much does just this happen in real life?

Bison burgers are yummy. Before ground bison meat was widely available in grocery stores, bison burger was my go-to fav menu selection at the Smithsonian.

we had a neighbor who had a ‘pet’ bison- it was friendly UNTIL it wasn’t- gored him in the belly- he survived for awhile, but complications and infection killed him later-

Bison are very deceptive. They’re big and they look slow but they can sprint and stomp a dog or wolf to death and that happens a lot. Stomping or goring some idiot selfie-taker was probably easy.

I had bison burger on that trip, too. Flavorful but a tad dry. Elk sliders though - Yum!!

I broke and trained some horses until I was in my 40’s. The most powerful, and last, I broke and trained was a gray mule. I had him green broke, but he hated dogs. I hit the ground one time too many when a dog got close. I wanted to ride him in our local wagon trains instead of my horse but since so many bring dogs on the train, that wasn’t going to happen. We took him to the Columbia Mule Days and sold him green broke with a warning about dogs. LOL

“...people should stay more than 25 yards away from bison.”

Those beasts can run 35+ MPH, so they’ll close the distance very quickly, unless you’re a 4 sec/100yd sprinter.

There’s a reason American Indians would stampede buffalo off cliff..............

Finally!

How many idiots have to get up close to these beasts before they get the horn? I mean come on bison get your act together you can effectively maintain your privacy if you just start goring people more often! AND the park service will issue the trespasser a ticket with a healthy imposed fine for bothering you!

I think the real shame is when the park service feels the need to execute one of the animals because human willfully precipitated a direct encounter of the 3rd kind.

The idiots should be ticketed, fined, and restraining orders issued barring them from federal and state parks for life - With the exception of mandated trash pickup after major holidays for a period decided upon at the federal court level.

And to pay for the animal execution plus the cost of the animal itself!

I’ve had lots of game meat. TBH, and all arguments aside I prefer the taste of corn-fed beef. But that’s just me I think it’s kind of strange when somebody gets venison and grinds it up with beef fat to make it taste better.

My brother-in-law and his sons take a lot of venison every year and they don’t doctor it up except with spices and marinade but not with other fats. It tastes fine, but I still prefer cornfed beef.

There was . . . and there was also a reason such a wasteful method of bison hunting got the tribal elders upset.

A few years of plenty of buffalo would often be followed by years of buffalo in short supply.

The Pawnee and Mandan probably handled things the best by relying on agriculture as their main source of food and hunting buffalo after the harvest was in . . . at least until more aggressive tribes moved in on their territory.

“It only takes a second feeling the power of an animal, a fellow member of the mammal family that size to understand where you stand in the muscle food chain of life.”

Good observation. I felt the same way about water after flipping a canoe and being held under by the force of water against a log. No matter how strong I was I was powerless.

Im not getting a warm fuzzy about this woman actions prior to the bison charging.

If they were walking away, Im guessing she turned to meet the bison head on?

Ive recently been 40 feet from one, but we were on a bus, he stopped because he wanted the road to himself for a few minutes..

otoh. I wouldnt get within 500 yards of bison unless there was a barrier between us strong enough to stop a F-350 quadcab dually doing about 35 mph.

Rode my bike past a small herd in the same spot. They are huge animals and got out of there as quick as possible.

My dad raised Belgian horses. I tried to talk him into breeding one of his mares with an American Mammoth jack to get a really big mule, but he wouldn’t.

Everyone has their Yellowstone stories….and no doubt many has this one….

…having to stop and wait in the middle of the highway at Yellowstone., for a herd of bison to wander, slowly across the road…….

They are huge, and the one standing next to our car was rather frightening
