China’s GAC Introduces New Car Engine That Runs On Toxic Ammonia
Motor Trend ^ | June 26, 2023 | Justin Banner

While the world is looking to get away from internal combustion engines (ICE) and towards battery electric vehicles (BEV) or fuel cell vehicles (FCVs) for cleaner emissions, China-state owned Guangzhou Automobile Group Co. (GAC) appears to want to do it all. During its annual technology showcase, the Chinese partner to Toyota showed off an engine powered by ammonia. While it's not the first ever to use the rather toxic fertilizer as a combustible fuel, it would be the first to use it outside the shipping and trucking industries.

GAC is 50% owned by Toyota. Running a car on ammonia would produce zero carbon dioxide.

This is another alternative to electric vehicles

Without CO2, plants aren’t going to like it.

Is this a Bill Gates idea to reduce global population?

One of the byproducts of generating ammonia is carbon dioxide.

“Is this a Bill Gates idea to reduce global population?”

No it is a Toyota design for an alternative fuel engine that actually works and would use an affordable fuel. Ammonia has almost the energy density of gasoline and can be easily produced and stored.

Doesn’t urine have a lot of ammonia in it?

I got to wonder at what point did we lose such reasoning capability that we accept a wacko edict from the EPA that carbon dioxide is a pollutant?

And somehow we’re better off replacing it with extremely toxic gas like ammonia?

I have been around plants that use and produce ammonia and the safety considerations are pretty heavy duty. As a matter of fact I had to make a sales call to the purchasing office at a phosphate plant in Florida one time. I had to watch a 10 minute video on what to do in the event that ammonia was released in an accident before I was allowed to go in and talk with the purchasing manager. Basically the instructions were to run in the opposite direction. And if the wind was blowing it in your direction you were just SOL

Why do we need an alternative?

There is no man-made global warming and CO2 is NOT a pollutant!

Are there Ammonia resources in the volumes necessary to replace gas powered demands?

What's the cost to rework the infrastructure and the filling stations?

I think part of the issue here is that neither China nor Japan have any appreciable domestic oil production. Being nations concerned with their security getting a fuel source they do not have to import might be attractive to them.

Doesn't have to be that way ... there's a cool new tech that generates ammonia (and oxygen) from water, nitrogen (from the air), and electricity. It's not commercialized yet, but sounds very promising.

(Someone's surely going to chime in with "Yeah, but where does the electricity come from?" ... I never said it was a free lunch [petroleum isn't either, btw] but there are obviously ways to generate electricity that don't involve oil or gas.)

It's called "electrolysis of water". Not new, but maybe somebody has found a better ways of doing it. At present, hydrogen is commercially generated by reforming CH4.

Yeah ... you can fission uranium or plutonium. Everything else is either carbon or solar. And solar is limited to 1 kw/m2 at the top of the atmosphere, at the equator, at high noon.

This headline is ridiculous. Gas is toxic. Every car runs on toxic chemicals. I guess a hydrogen car is not so much toxic as it is a bomb. But ammonia is a few Hydrogen atoms with one Nitrogen atom. We have ammonia everywhere in this world. It forms naturally and we can easily make it. It does not explode. But in a gas form in a confined area it can be fatal. Just ask India. I believe we are talking about a long time Japanese car that is being produced in China as a demo. Japan is not buying the concept of all electric cars. They are researching lots of cleaner fuels besides lithium.

How is it produced? Any specifics?

Waste enough money and energy, you can do lots of stupid stuff. Doesn't make the stupid stuff "promising".
