A Tropical Parasite, Passed Through the Bite of a Sand Fly, Is Causing Skin Infections in the US

Move over mosquitos. There's another blood-sucking biter Americans need to guard against because it can spread disease: the sand fly.Sand flies are tiny tan flies — about a quarter of the size of a mosquito — that live in warm, wet, rural and forested areas. In other parts of the world, they are known to transmit a parasite — a single-celled organism — that causes an infectious disease called leishmaniasis. They're most active at night, and they're so tiny they can slip through ordinary mosquito nets on tents or window screens.

"Sometimes you don't even notice that you've been bitten," said Dr. Mary Kamb, a medical epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, one of the few labs in this country that can distinguish the species of Leishmania parasite that has infected a person.

Kamb and her colleagues at the CDC say they've now detected leishmaniasis in a number of tissue samples from patients who say they have not traveled outside the United States. They conducted a genetic analysis of these samples and collected them into a new study that was presented today at the annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. These patients all had leishmaniasis skin infections, which start with a small bump that erupts into ulcerous sores days to weeks after a sand fly bite.

Masking can prevent these parasites.

Yes, but only if you put the mask on the sand fly.

Exactly. It’s hard for them to move with the mask, and impossible to bite.

And using ivermectin to treat the parasite is a certain death sentence.

CDS and/or a zapper will nuke the parasite.

Well, looks like Fauci’s beagle experiments could come in handy. How long had the CDC known that sand flies have been introduced to the US?

REad the book “Lost City of the Monkey God” by Preston.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douglas_Preston

Leishmaniasis (also known as White Leprosy) is not curable and is transported by sandflys that bite infected mammals. It’s spreading from Central America via mass migration. Usually though pets being brought by migrants. It can be stopped by a very painful and nasty procedure, but, all this does is weaken the disease until your body can fight it off.

The good news is that this species of leishmania does not cause visceral (liver, lymph nodes, etc) disease.

The bad news is the border is open

I wrote a paper on this disease becoming a threat to the US back in veterinary school in 1982 if the US didn't stay diligent on carriers coming into the US. Dogs are susceptible. Chagas' Disease is also making way into the US as the vector, the kissing bug, has now made its way and found as far as Tennessee.

“ Leishmaniasis (also known as White Leprosy) is not curable and is transported by sandflys that bite infected mammals. It’s spreading from Central America ”

Of course it’s curable. The Central America part is true.

“ Some medications that might have merit for treating selected cases of leishmaniasis are commercially available in the United States but the FDA-approved indications do not include leishmaniasis. Examples of such medications include the parenteral agents amphotericin B deoxycholate and pentamidine isethionate, as well as the orally administered “azoles” (ketoconazole, itraconazole, and fluconazole).”

Not to say it over again but FDA “indications” do not limit use of licensed drugs.
