A Tropical Parasite, Passed Through the Bite of a Sand Fly, Is Causing Skin Infections in the US

Move over mosquitos. There's another blood-sucking biter Americans need to guard against because it can spread disease: the sand fly.Sand flies are tiny tan flies — about a quarter of the size of a mosquito — that live in warm, wet, rural and forested areas. In other parts of the world, they are known to transmit a parasite — a single-celled organism — that causes an infectious disease called leishmaniasis. They're most active at night, and they're so tiny they can slip through ordinary mosquito nets on tents or window screens.

"Sometimes you don't even notice that you've been bitten," said Dr. Mary Kamb, a medical epidemiologist at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, one of the few labs in this country that can distinguish the species of Leishmania parasite that has infected a person.

Kamb and her colleagues at the CDC say they've now detected leishmaniasis in a number of tissue samples from patients who say they have not traveled outside the United States. They conducted a genetic analysis of these samples and collected them into a new study that was presented today at the annual meeting of the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. These patients all had leishmaniasis skin infections, which start with a small bump that erupts into ulcerous sores days to weeks after a sand fly bite.

“No-see-ums”

Never mind...yours sound a whole lot worse than mine.

Per wiki:

“Ceratopogonidae is a family of flies commonly known as no-see-ums, or biting midges, generally 1–3 millimetres (1⁄16–1⁄8 in) in length. The family includes more than 5,000 species,[2] distributed worldwide, apart from the Antarctic and the Arctic.”

Be sure to thank 535 members of the US Congress aka the Uniparty for not securing our borders. Note that the US Congress has done NOTHING to honor their Oaths of Office to protect and defend this nation from our enemies both foreign and domestic. And, yes, that means protecting us from the diseases and plagues coming across our porous borders including terrorists and their desires to kill us here on our own soil.

In fact, those domestic enemies that we need protecting against are sitting in political offices, down to dog catcher, nationwide including DC.

Don’t say such silly stuff. A mask is only good against an airborne respiratory pathogen. It is no good against an insect. You need DEET or something to repel the insects.

I wonder how the sand flies got here. Maybe in the gear of returning servicemembers from Iraq or Afghanistan.

Highly suspect they were “imported” for an unsuspecting populace.

Well..... that’s what a friend said.

Yep! Great book. Started out as an interesting study of the archeology, turned into a Horror story real quick.

Preston showed up on “The Unexplained” talking about it.

Masking can prevent these parasites.

So can deporting illegals, or better yet, stopping them from coming into the country.
