Andre Braugher, the two-time Emmy winning actor who starred in the hit television series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Homicide: Life on the Street,” died Monday after a brief illness. He was 61.
Braugher’s publicist Jennifer Allen confirmed the news of his death to Variety.
Braugher was known for his role as Captain Raymond Holt on the police procedural comedy series “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” from 2013 until 2021. His character’s stoic and no-nonsense personality made him an instant fan favorite of the show, especially when paired with Andy Samberg’s hotshot Det. Jake Peralta in a scene.
He won a lead actor Emmy for his role as Detective Frank Pembleton on “Homicide: Life on Street,” and won another Emmy for miniseries or movie for his performance in “Thief.”

Liked him in Homicide and Glory Sixty-one so so sad. RIP.
Loved him in “Frequency”. Rest in Peace sir.
A shame. He had a commanding presence.
Oh yeah, I remember him from Homicide: Life on the Street.
Oh no! He was one of my favorite actors. I especially liked him as House’s doctor....House couldn’t fake him out. RIP.....sigh
so it was neither suddenly nor unexpectedly, just died... OK
K
I saw him today. .he played a psychiatrist on House. .
..
Damn good actor.
He was excellent in Glory…….a fav movie
A favorite of mine too.
It said after a brief illness. .
.
……
I liked him on Men of a Certain Age, which is why I tuned in for the first episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. When it was revealed his character was gay, I dropped out. But he was really good on Men of a Certain Age and other shows I watched.
“I liked him on Men of a Certain Age.....”
Yep, a show that was criminal that it was canned after two seasons. Ray Ramono was excellent as well as Scott Bakula.
“Read the article; brief illness”
Yeah sad. Brain, pancreatic cancer can be quick. Hope he was in peace and without pain.
I need to rewatch it again. There were a lot of great shows that were canceled early at the time. Terriers and Vegas (with Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis) were other good ones that only went one season. Sarah Jones was so cute on the latter.
Richard Gant, who played Braugher’s father on Men of a Certain Age, has outlived him.
Homicide was a great show. Lots of full episodes are on YouTube.
He was also good in “Glory” with Matthew Broderick and Morgan Freeman. Rest In Peace, Andre.
Homicide was an acquired taste. Purposely anti-formulaic. But his character interrogating suspects could be more suspenseful than any car chase.
