Browsing through social media but never liking or commenting on posts may be a sign of a mental health condition, a new study has revealed.
Researchers at the Central China Normal University found that people who use platforms 'passively' are more likely suffer from social anxiety compared to people who use it actively - uploading posts and sharing life updates.
The team surveyed more than 500 college students on their mental health and social media use, finding that 'voyeurs' were more afraid of unfamiliar situations in their physical lives.
On the other hand, those who used social media actively found they had more social support and improved friendship quality.
The study, published in BMC Psychology, included 571 students from Shanxi Province and Hubei Province in China from May to July 2022.
The group completed questionnaires measuring openness, active and passive social media use, self-evaluation and social anxiety.
To measure openness, subjects were asked to rank a series of statements: one for strongly disagreed to four for strongly agreed.
These statements included: 'I see myself as someone who is inventive' and 'I see myself as someone who has an active imagination.'
The next measurement, active and passive social media use, was a nine-item questionnaire that asked how much they post, such as status updates, likes and comments.
The study noted that 'active use refers to information-generating behaviors that enhance communication, such as posting status updates or comments.

A clickbait story if ever one existed.
My conclusion: that’s just silly.
The Daily has changed their Comments format over the last year. It has been split into two collections of reader comments. Sometimes neighter format will pick up a new remark. Other times, you have to devise roundabout methods to view your posting and any reactions to it.
The newer collection of comments will often try to censor what you post. The system will ask you: “Are you sure you want to post this as written? Some members of the community may find it disturbing.” I can usually change one word or fiddle with spacing to make my remark more “acceptable’ to their new software. Sometimes, I refuse to change anything, and will ignore their Karen type warnings.
Mostly, they can’t write.
They can’t now and never actually could, compose a complete sentence
Because it’s important to demonstrate intelligence and belonging when you’re committed to commenting on Tiktock, fakebook, bigolive, etc.
where would we be if even Freepers couldn’t vent, rant, comment? My day would not start without some connection to intelligent life out there.
Easy to say when you’re a leftist who won’t get canceled for your likes and comments.
bttt
This STUPID article title literally made be laugh out loud.
Serious risk of wasting time is a greater concern. I don’t have accounts in FB, Twitter, Pinterest, Tiktok...you name it, I don’t go there.
FR is as social as I get online and I don’t post much here. Life is short and no one knows quite how short.
So if a site saves you time, have at it. Otherwise, avoid.
To: dozens of FRiends,
I don’t see any of us having that problem.
De-lurk.
I’ve been lurkin’ here for years, haven’t posted anything until today.
I'd still be commenting there if they hadn't banned me for life, simply for offering historical facts. I'm 76 now. Was probably around 70-71 at the time when they banned me. I've been here 26 years, and have never been banned or suspended. But the Daily Mail found a 70 year old woman such a threat, that they had to ban her. I wear it as a badge of honor.
.
Hahahaha!
I don't have any social media accounts. Never tried any of original sites. When Trump got tossed off Twitter, I joined Parler thinking he'd end up there. He didn't, and then Parler was bounced off the internet. Tried Gab and Gettr, then Truth Social. Got rid of them all, because I found them a waste of time. There's more here on FR, than any of those other sites. That's why I've stuck around for 26 years.
Not living where FR originates, I guess I’ll be hiding behind a keyboard. However, I would express the same opinions even if I were’t.
“Central China Normal”
That sounds oxymoronic.
We passed that milestone years ago.....................🤦♂️
More BS from China!
We sure don't. I can't seem to keep my mouth shut online.
Nope.
