CHICAGO () - When temperatures drop to bone-chilling levels like we’re experiencing now, railroads use open flames to keep the trains moving..
According to Metra spokesman Michael Gillis, they’re using natural gas to heat switches.
“It looks like the tracks are on fire, but what it is, there are gas burners next to the switches, and we light them to keep the switches warm, so the switches can move,” said Gillis. “If they freeze up, then our trains can’t change tracks and that leads to congestion…It’s really essential to keep the switches operational so that we can keep our trains operational.”
There’s a spot near Grand and Western where there’s the highest concentration of switches, and Gillis said, where there’s the most switch heaters in use.
Metra at one time used kerosene to heat switches.

So when natural gas and kerosene are not available because biden made them illegal, the trains won’t run.

I worked for the Chessie System in the early 70’s. We used fiberglass insulation soaked in #2 diesel to heat up tracks. Good fun!
I remember being near the main gate at WRAFB right before I got shipped overseas in 69. The main railroad line ran parallel the road skirting the main gate, and you could see very long distances both ways. What I saw coming from the north on a train was a bright orange/red glow in the middle of a train passing. It was a stuck hot wheel being drug down the rails and heating from friction. Damndest thing I ever saw. Never seen it since.

Ask the Canadians for help...they heat with electricity all day everyday near the Arctic circle of course they have CANDU nuclear reactors by the 8 pack pumping out cheap electricity 24/7. Better yet ask the S.Koreans to build you one of those CANDU reactors they do it in under 4 years and at $1800kw capex. Fuel for a CANDU is measured in tenths of a cent per kWh as in under a penny in fuel costs , O&M is half that of a PWR all in with waste disposal fees a CANDU can sell at the busbar 1.5cent power and break even. No other power source on earth is that cheap with a 90% capacity factor.
Electricity is not wrong it’s where it’s sourced from. Hydro and nukes are the cheapest on earth if you get the greens and their lawfare out of way. Same for Union labor cut them out and the price drops by half.
