“The mess we are in in these USA is because we have strayed from the basic government that was created.”

What does this have to do with ATSC 3.0?

I suspect it will be years before stations convert to 3.0. Start saving.

DRM encryption needs to be banned for over the air broadcasts. They are trying to force people into getting subscription services by making it annoying / impossible to get over the air broadcasts. That is anti-free market.

Requiring a live internet connection defeats the entire purpose of antenna broadcast TV...not everyone has the internet, and then if your internet goes out, you could not even get over the air TV when the internet network is down.

ATSC 3.0 could solve that problem - but with them trying to encrypt and forcing you to have a live internet connection to receive the signals, that could kill this upgrade. That defeats the entire purpose of over the air broadcast TV.

Internet is not required to receive ATSC 3 OTA.

It is if they block it with DRM encryption, which is the major issue and controversy with ATSC 3.0 as this undermines the entire concept of broadcast / antenna received TV.

Correct. Encrypting signals and requiring a live internet connection to get over the air broadcasts should be totally banned. That is one government mandate that would actually be designed to protect freedom.

I live 70 miles from the nearest station and I don’t have cable.

“I live 70 miles from the nearest station and I don’t have cable.”

What is your concern as related to the OP?

It’s not a concern.

I just have no use for an ATSC tuner.

Yes, but recently there are more and more commercials about tuning your TV to receive OTA channels, buy an OTA antenna, get channels for free, etc.

ATSC 3.0 has been very controversial in broadcasters trying to force people onto paid services by requiring live internet connections in order to access ATSC 3.0 broadcasts by using DRM encryption. DRM encryption of over the air broadcasts should be banned.

Even if you get a TV set or box that is “certified” to read the DRM encrypted channels, you would be required to have a live internet connection to do it. Otherwise, even ATSC 3.0 compatible TVs and boxes will not allow you to get over the air signals because of this encryption if they are not “certified” and don’t have a live internet connection...like stated before, this practice should be banned for over the air signals - your internet connection goes down, no TV. Requiring an internet connection totally undermines the entire point of over the air broadcast signals - which is of course what they are going for to try to force people onto paid services.

There is no analog TV anymore it’s all digital.

ATSC 1 is the the standard digital tuner in nearly all TV’s. I see no effort to sunset that standard. They can’t track you through ATSC 1. This is the only way to watch the Super Bowl without giving the NFL anything unlike streaming.

ATSC 3 is a different (and rare standard in very few TVs) that allows 4k signals over the air and high quality audio.

For us audio/video buffs it’s all the hi-fi quality of the content. However that’s not how content providers are viewing it. ATSC 3 allows the addition of DRM (digital rights management) which can make it impossible to record or even view content without authorization.

I think this should be illegal because they are limiting access to public property (the airwaves).

Internet connection not required to be DRM compliant.
