They HATED the Zulus, because they were once their slaves ( the Boers did NOT own slaves! ), though Mandela and Mbeki were both very well educated, from wealthy families, and knew how to give the appearance of being "reasonable".

Mandella, communist that he was, still saw the necessity of creating a black middle class to facilitate the transition from Apartheid to an integrated polity. Unfortunately, he died, and afterwards so did his efforts.
The Boers did not own slaves after the Great Trek, because in the Grahamstown Manifesto they declared that they would no longer own them, but would make such laws as were necessary between masters and servants. Arguably, the colored and black servants that they kept on the veldt were more like serfs than actual slaves. Many of them perished in the concentration camps that Lord Kitchener set up, along with the “memsahibs and “little baas” to whom they were connected.
They are savages by nature.

Yes, I do know all about the Brits invention of CONCENTRATION CAMPS, which were as brutal as one can imagine.
OTOH, in more modern times, blacks who worked for whites were NOT normally ( I don't know about EVERYBODY, but DO KNOW about many! ) treated quite well.
The Brits didn’t invent concentration camps. That distinction goes to the Spanish in Cuba.
And there was a middle class, but not a substantial one. It grew as the Nationalists slowly yielded to the inevitable and the strictures of Apartheid declined, preparing the way for Mandela’s ascension to power, I believe with his cooperation. But of course his efforts had to fail in the end. Communism is communism. To his credit, he didn’t commit any massacres of whites or dissident blacks. Now that he’s long gone, it’s started. Again: Relatively reasonable.
The Afrikaners in RSA and many history books claim otherwise!

The whole SOWETO UPRISING, was basically done by a group of slum dwelling blacks, who were AGAINST having their children taught Afrikaans AND more importantly ENGLISH! Neither did they want their own children to actually be well educated. They wanted to keep their own tribal language and that was that, so a math teacher was railroaded out and the riots began in earnest.
So...........HOW can the poor raise themselves up, when they are unable to read and speak languages that are used in business, locally, and re English, WORLD WIDE?
The ANC was formed by USSR loving COMMIE whites, most of whom, were later murdered by the blacks whom they had mentored. It was not exactly like, but still a COMMIE pattern, of the once leaders being murdered by those whom they trained.

When Mandela, the COUGH/CHOKE "relatively reasonable" COUGH/CHOKE took over, the police departments threw out the vast majority of whites. He also gave high positions, to top ANC members and their family members, but they were NO SHOW JOBS, kicked out some whites, and the remaining whites had to do their own work, as well as the jobs of the NO SHOWS and/or incompetent blacks who either never came to work, or once there, did NOTHING!
But yes, that "grew" the middle and upper middle classes of blacks. YIIIIPPPPPPPPEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

South Africa was once a nuclear power in the sense that it developed and possessed nuclear weapons. It is the only country to have voluntarily dismantled its entire nuclear weapons program. South Africa built six nuclear weapons in the 1980s but dismantled them in the early 1990s before joining the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) as a non-nuclear weapon state. Since then, South Africa has not maintained a nuclear weapons program but does maintain a significant nuclear energy infrastructure for peaceful purposes.
Met a young woman from South Africa (English, not Afrikaner) last fall who was in the US as an au pair but was planning to return to South Africa in February 2024 to go to college--did not appear to be afraid to go back.
ALL students, in RSA are taught English in school.
Some are more proficient in speaking it than others, but they ALL understand the English written word. Many blacks and coloureds can speak Afrikaans as well; just as many whites ( though now I think it's less ) know at least one tribal language.
And Afrikaans was also taught in schools, as well!
The original settlers were Dutch and Hugennot French, who had fled to the Netherlands, during the great PROTESTANT MASSACRE in France. Their last names were Dutchified, when they were living there, so you WILL find some strange spellings of last names, as a result of that.
Some diehard RSAers still, sadly, haven't woken up to the fact that staying there is not ever going to get better.
OTOH...it is virtually IMPOSSIBLE to leave RSA and depending upon her Visa, she probably could NOT stay here, for many different reasons!
If she was going back to attend college, I wonder which one she's going to. A few years ago, black college students there RIOTED and attacked a lot of the white kids; it was disgusting and egged on by racism towards white. Which was really ridiculous, since the blacks were there too and NOT ill treated by ANYONE.
