Neither hospital where I work has the nose spray vaccine. Thanks for the idea, though...

You work in two hospitals, and can't get a flu shot (or snort)?!

Can you just call in sick for the flu season...

Stay well as best you can.

"from what i've read, the pandemic of 1918 was different from a typical flu outbreak in that it hit young, previously healthy, adults as well as the usual old and sick people."

It's my understanding that it began on an army base in Kansas (young troops) and was spread around the world when those troops shipped out. Something like 40-50 million died worldwide if IIRC.

Was my post #38 meanspirited? :(

I hope you didn't take anything I directed at trajanus_red to be directed at you. If so I apologize for the confusion...

If you are reffering to your comments to trajanus_red, I didn't see anything you posted as meanspirited. I'm the one who posted that I think he or she is an idiot, which could possibly be taken as meanspirited, though I consider it nothing more than my personal opinion based on my observation of his/her posts... :)

Take care Free Trapper.

People need to stop imbibing medications because of the FALSE fear instilled in the public.

I tend to agree. I've avoided the medical establishment like the plague for the last 30+ years, haven't had a vaccination of any kind since the ones forced on me in the Army, and I'm the healthiest person I know. Everyone around me can be dropping like flies from flu, colds, etc. and I just keep going like the energizer bunny.

IMO, the immune system is like any other system in our body. It needs to be used and cared for to remain strong and effective. Trying to defeat every little thing that comes along before the immune system has a go at it results in suceptability (big time) to just about everything in the long run. Flu shots should probably be limited to people with other serious medical conditions that make the flu especially dangerous to them.

I agree with everything you posted on this thread, big time.

I still can't figure out why in the world you or anyone else got jumped.HeHe.

I'm in Northeast Alabama and one of my children (6) apparently got the last dose of the injectible vaccine that will be available in our city. Everyone else is totally and completely out and they say they will not be getting anymore.

Our pediatrician was saving one dose for a worthy candidate, and being that my child is asthmatic and a case of flu would be really bad news for him, he was the fortunate one. They did have a little bit of the FluMist nasal vaccine remaining, so I brought my older child (9) in later in the day and spent the money ... $66, not covered by insurance although the manufacturer is offering a $25 rebate ... to immunize him with that. The younger child couldn't take the FluMist, again because he is asthmatic.

I may look around to see if there's any more FluMist left in town early next week, but right now my wife and I are inclined to ride it out and take proper precautions and take our chances.

Wasn't there something on the news today about a near-riot in Fort Lauderdale, when some clinic offered flu shots and hundreds of people showed up, some of them waiting in line a couple of hours, and the clinic only had 50 doses on hand?

Basically, I think the media has again turned something that is a big deal and cause for concern into the coming of the apocalypse, panicking everybody into those kinds of actions. And I say that even though I am a member of the media.

Still, this particular flu appears to be hammering children pretty hard ... most of the deaths have been children, and I've heard that some children are getting so sick from this that they're having to be put on respirators ... and people wanting to get their children immunized are apparently a big part of the furor here. Our pediatrician said they were getting calls from across the state from people who were desperately searching for vaccine for their kids.

That's understandable, it's a parent's inclination to take care of the kids' needs first.

As far as whether one should be immunized against diseases or not, and as far as the medical establishment, etc. ... I'm not one of those "doctors are gods" folks, but I'm no Luddite when it comes to medical science, either. Compare the quality of life and the quantity of life spans back in the "good old days" when all people had were natural remedies, healing, etc., to the quality of life and the quantity of life spans in today's world where we have immunizations, etc., and I choose the latter, big time.

Good, and if what you posted got her/him riled up - I'll take it for team, at least until you get better...

Of course I'm also thick skinned, and my wife says thick skulled, so even if it was soley my doing I won't be losing any sleep.

I agree with everything you posted on this thread, big time.

I have a hard time when people jump to the edge (or beyond) paranoia when it comes to health issue. Skeptisism is good, freaking out and trying to convince people that they shouldn't vaccinate their kids against largely preventable diseases is just stupid in my book.

I still can't figure out why in the world you or anyone else got jumped.HeHe.

Unless s/he's santa clause I'm not worried.

Get better.

Had a post made on the other thread and refreshed it.:(

D. what you said about hearing things.I've been driving my kids nuts checking sounds for over 24 hrs.Wife came in 6 times last night-not,vehicles and old kind of buzz saws pretty close-not.About an hour ago I started hearing someone pounding on the door and no ones there.Sound hallucinations I guess you'd call it.I'm doing a little better now but this is weird.Shake a lot, too.I've got lots of folk to take care of me so don't worry on that,if I log-off.I know all the kids have to check in when we're sick.:O)

I nearly feel decent now.I haven't ever had it like this, before but it might be that my system is run down from some surgeries so don't figure it's this bad for everyone. If this needs to be pulled,do it.I'm a lot better but gotta run.

I read a story about one guy who had the 1918 flu bug. Felt ill and the morning and was dead by the evening. Everyone in my family has got this current strain except for my husband. Sure wish I had gotten us the shots. For those of you healthy out there--do it before it's too late.

Husband and I got ours yesterday in Arkansas. The price has tripled at the health Dept. from last time I had to pay for one.

I'm hospitalized with almost ever cold I get due to asthma - people in my category cannot use the nasal vaccine, it contains live virus. The injected one is dead vaccine and can't cause the flu, but.... I will never get one at the Drs. office again. Sitting there an hour or two with other patients coughing and sneezing, I always catch something!

I do believe there can be a reaction to the shot. Other years I've gotten a sore throat, felt achy and sick all over but it's usually short and obviously not the flu.

I wonder if they stopped making the vaccine as it wasn't quite the strain that is going around.

Keep telling your families to stay away from anyone coughing and wash, wash, wash, especially if you work with the public!!! My worst year was running a store next to a pharmacy, most of my wintertime customers were sick, browsing while waiting for an RX to be filled.

What part of Arkansas? My parents both come from St. Francis County (Forrest City).
