"I think NV Repubs need to hold Ensign's feet to the fire."

Like I did last night?

As to the animal issue.
John is a veterinarian in real life, and a target for the bunny huggers as a result.

I spend too much time on politics as it is, I pretty much ignore the circus animal/exotic pet thing as much as I can.

There is another meeting tonight in Las Vegas, I hope some people from here made arrangements to attend, because "NV Repubs need to hold Ensign's feet to the fire."

We ALWAYS have to remain vigilant, it is the price of freedom!

You have a point, in some respects.

But I do not think gun rights supporters memory will be THAT short!

I also do not think the CFR is going to be enforceable against every concerned american with a keyboard or the abilty to share their opinion.

"will be pushing this 24/7 next year".

Next year? HA, too damn late, it expires THIS year!

I know what you meant, just pointing out that the sunset is only SEVEN months away.
Every day we get closer without the anti's getting their way the better chance that WE will prevail.

You make some good points.

I suspect Colt will continue to produce post ban AR-15's and Ruger will continue to not sell high capacity mini-14 mags to the public.

Never underestimate the ability of politicians to forget where they left their spines the moment the media starts manufacturing a "public outcry".

Indeed. Most likely the renewal, maybe even the horrible expansion version, will be offerred as a floor amendment, likely passed by "unanamous consent" at "O dark thirty" some night in the Senate. An amendment to some must pass bill, even a totally unrelated one perhaps. That is more or less how we got the thing in the first place, is it not? It certainly was not passed as a stand alone bill.

I think you're right. End the voice votes. It's no harder to push a button and record the vote than it is to raise your hand. I repeat - end unrecorded votes.

There are also several legislators - in both houses - who are prepared to add poison pills to any bill extending or expanding the AWB. Things like... a repeal of the part of FOPA 1986 that prohibits the ownership of machine guns manufactured after May 19, 1986.... removing the "sporting purposes" clause from GCA 1968... etc.

The gun-haters are sneaks, liars, and will pull
whatever trick they think they can get away with
to further their agenda of total civilian disarmament.

You make a good point about "triangulation".

I think that Bush believed that he had to go along with the Assault Weapons Ban because so many voters are ignorant and believed that it had something to do with machine guns. Hopefully, he knows better.

But in this case, the triangulation is arranged in our favor, assuming that the Congress plays "bad cop" on the AWB by failing to pass it, allowing Bush to play "good cop" by assuring the ignorant that he would sign it.

I see nothing wrong with confusing the Demoncrat gun-grabbers by allowing them to waste their time on measures that won't pass. This diverts them from working on measures that might pass.

I think that it is very valuable for politicians of both parties to understand that gun-control is a losing issue. If your representative fails to get elected even though he supports the Second Amendment, then it weakens the message that being anti-gun vs pro-gun is bad for one's career.

There is no reason why GWB cannot say that "I have re-evaluated my position on the AWB and will not support a renewal of the bill. At the time I offered my support for the bill I did not have the benefit of the studies that show the bill is ineffective, nor did I have the benefit of the new study* that indicates most Americans do not support the ban."

*"Recent evidence of this comes in the form of data from a poll conducted by John Zogby for Southern Methodist University's Tower Center and the O'Leary Report...Surprisingly, however, the data showed that while more people in the blue states favor new and tougher gun laws than those in the red states, most voters in both groups of states are far more supportive of the right to own firearms than the Democrats suspected. Indeed, only the sorts of urban and campus-based liberals who dominate the leadership of the Democratic Party were found to be as hostile to gun ownership as Gore and his running mate had been in 2000."

-- Gun issue could cost Democrats the White House again, David Keene, The Hill, Tuesday, January 13, 2004.

Yes, like you did the other night. I think you did a great job and I hope more of his constituents will remind him how important the sunset of this bill is.

Good news indeed. I would be more excited about this, but we continue to get more and more gun control each year in California. I think the first AR-15/M-16 that I'll fire will be at the Naval Academy if I end up getting an appointment there.
