Mel Gibson To Produce 'Boudicca' Film Epic

Flush from the success of The Passion Of The Christ, Mel Gibson is looking back in time once again – to produce an epic about Boudicca, who led Britain against Roman conquerors.

Dubbed “Braveheart with a bra”, the film will chronicle Boudicca’s rise from peasant girl to a military leader who united the Celtic tribes of Britain.

Gibson’s production company, Icon, appears keen to cash in on further historical tales, after The Passion netted hundreds of millions of pounds at the box office.

The film will be directed by Gavin O’Connor who told the Hollywood trade paper Variety: “What drew me is that she was driven by personal revenge.

“Her goals were never political and never went beyond avenging her slain husband and child.

“She managed to bring together all of these warring tribes to stand against the Roman Empire.

“It is a masculine story with a female point of view.”

Brian Klugman, who co-wrote the script with Lee Sternthal, said: “We spent over a year researching Queen Boudicca, Celtic Britain and the Roman Empire, and another year writing the script.”

We recently got DVR service, which I guess is our cable co's version of TIVO. Commercials are now a thing of the past! This thing is amazing! You just record everything, watch it whenever you want and skip over the commercials! There are no tapes, one touch recording of anything...it's amazing. You can even pause and rewind live tv. We love it! (I bet you're wondering when I have the chance to watch TV, when I'm always on FreeRepublic). What a life!

Thanks for the info on Boudicca.

I'd love Mel Gibson to produce a movie telling the story of Sgt. Pat Tilman.

I think the women who were there, as leaders or as priests, were topless at least

They may have been topless but, if I recall correctly, they were also covered with blue paint. Since they used a substance called woad, a fairly permanent dye, and likely refreshed the paint before each battle these warriors would remain streaked with blue paint for a long time.

I think Gibson is a sick man who is infatuated with violence of particularly gruesome and sadistic nature.

Well, if you know your Hannibal, you should know your Aristotle as well. Gibson is infatuated with catharsis.

Well, professor, I will put forth the answer to a Stanford University Quiz Bowl question and leave it at that:

25. Identify her, 30-20-10.

(30) She burned the ancient equivalents of Colchester, St. Albens, and London to the ground in 60 AD. Motive: revenge.

(20) She was the wife of King Prasutagus of the Iceni. When Prasutagus, an ally of the Romans died, the local Roman governor decided that he would seize her wealth and lands for himself. When Boudicca protested, the Roman soldiers flogged her and raped her daughters.

(10) Her name lives on in legends. The term "bodacious", a lively and spirited woman, is derived from her name. The animated series Gargoyles had, on the island of Avalon, a "Bronx"-like beast named for her.

Boudicca

Ha! I can find a source for any darn thing on the Internet!

I hope that someday Mel tackles the story, of Hernan Cortez and the conquest of the Aztec empire.

I'd prefer to see that. The PC police would go nuts. There doesn't seem to be any overriding moral to this story that I can see (Romans bad, Celtics good?), which is disappointing.

Well, I was about to apologise for disputing you after I read that one article, but since you prefer to approach it as a smart-ass, so be it.

Check Webster, genius. I stand by my source.

Right on! Those Aztecs were a bad virgin sacrificing lot. The Latino communists love the barbaric Aztec regardless of the heart stabbing taking it out while beating, and the worship of pagan gods. In the warped world we live in the Aztecs are the noble smarts and the Spanisg Europeans are the savages.
