Sandy Froman believes America's civil rights are not being protected
It's the most powerful pro-gun lobbying organization in the nation and a Tucson woman is poised to become its leader.
In April 2005, the National Rifle Association will swear in Sandy Froman as its president.
Froman will succeed Charlton Heston, the actor-turned-activist whose "from my cold dead hands" anti-gun-control slogan defined his tenure as NRA president. Heston suffers from Alzheimer's disease.
Froman was 30 years old when she picked up her first gun, as a means of self-protection after an attempted home invasion. As president of the N.R.A., Froman plans to address and protect the civil rights of minorities, something she believes has been overlooked in the past.
In an exclusive interview with Fox 11 News, Froman said, "We take our rights for granted and as long as our garbage is pick up once a week we this the world is okay. People don't realize how easy it is to lose our rights."
Froman calls the N.R.A the oldest and largest civil rights organization in America.
"Historically it's been shown that when people who had a right to vote were prevented from going to the polls, they were able to protect themselves from violence and from the people who wanted to do them harm because they had firearms," Froman said.
Ten years ago, Froman was instrumental in passing a law in Arizona allowing people to apply for a permits to carry concealed weapons. Today, more than 67,000 Arizonans have concealed-carry permits.
Froman supports a controversial bill that allows patrons to carry guns into restaurants that serve alcohol.
"I think law-abiding citizens, peaceable people ought to have the same rights as criminals to protect themselves," Froman said.
But Tucson City Council Member Carol West believes America has become a nation of fearful people, too quick to purchase guns for protection.
"I think it's unnecessary. A patron doesn't need to carry a gun into a restaurant. Part of that has been perpetrated by these gun-rights groups who want people to feel afraid," West said.
West hopes to have an opportunity to meet with Froman. One issue she'd like to discuss is ways that parents can keep guns away from kids.
At Pima Pistol, a shooting range north of Tucson, members described their reasons for joining the N.R.A., calling it a hobby as well as a means of self-protection.
"Along with all the safety reasons, and getting young people interested in firearms and teaching them to use them properly, show the good parts about firearms, not always the bad," Gary Szczepamski said.
"As I got more involved in shooting and more worried about my second amendment rights the N.R.A. seemed like the only big lobbying group that cared about my second amendment rights," Debbie Ferns said.
And while Froman doesn't have her own Heston-like trademark phrase just yet "I haven't thought of one, the wheels are spinning," she said she's working on one.
"I tell people to join the N.R.A.," she said.
Should women have the vote? Should women be banned from holding office? Should they wear burkahs in public?
We wouldn't even need an NRA if we didn't have women ruling over men....
WTH??????
Perhaps you forget that women voting is a very new thing. Look at what it has given us.
What legistlation wouldn't have been passed if women didn't have the vote? What people wouldn't have been elected if women didn't have the vote? It's easy to make blanket statements but provide evidence for those statements.
The base constituents of the Democratic party do not even include white males. {base, good pun}.
Do you really want me to prove to you that Clinton couldn't have won an election where women couldn't vote? That would be a pointless exercise for me wouldn't it. If you don't think that the politics of the country hasn't shifted leftward since the 19th ammendment, well you're free to think that way.
A man named Clinton comes to mind immediately.
It sure seems like a Biblical case could be made for women covering their heads when they're praying or prophesying (1 Cor 11:5).
That reminds me, I've got to re-paint my pick-up roof.
I saw a TV show the other night about some French dude who had re-vitalized the French national soccer team. They had a shot of the championship game being played somewhere in Europe and to my amazement, right in front of the camera was a huge Rebel flag being waved. Go figure. I prefer the Bonnie Blue myself.
This is her.
That makes 3 of us. Me and SB have the BB plate on front.
Well, although I cannot completely agree with biblewonks position,I do wonder if we would have ever had Roe V Wade had it not been for womens participation.
In order for the "uppity woman" theory to be correct a time line would have to be created from the time women have had the vote showing what elections would have been different and then postulating what legislation would be changed. Until some of this evidence is submitted, I will assume that the "theory" is based on misogyny and not any Christian or philosophical principles
I hate to see that mentioned in the same contest as burkas.
I try not to let others' knee-jerks bother me. But, your point is quite valid. "Pearls" and such...
I'm sure we wouldn't and that was one of the many things that comes to mind. Ever notice how long it takes a church to go from a female pastor to doing gay marriages? The bible says women are easily deceived and look at the kinds of things that the Demoncrat party puts out and that they believe.
I neither said nor implied any such thing. You put words in my mouth and followed it by telling me how my alleged response could be "more accurate." That's rich.
... Until some of this evidence is submitted, I will assume ...
Yes, a lot of people go through life that way.
I had an exchange with a woman one time that perfectly summed up the whole dynamic. I told her, in some unrelated conversation, that I occaisionally would go running in the neighborhood very late a night if my schedule required it.
"That's DANGEROUS! You shouldn't do that!"
Not a problem. I always at least carry my knife.
"A KNIFE? You're SCARING me!"
I shouldn't run at night because it's dangerous, and I shouldn't arm myself because then I'm dangerous. The 19th Am unleashes this dynamic on us all, and we're forced to watch as the femininzed state sqeezes more and more actual freedom from our daily lives.
There are an awful lot of so called conservatives that think we can have the 19th ammendment and still live in a rational country.
I watch Mary Poppins with my kids and to me the biggest story in the whole show is that the wife is out trying to get the vote for women and the husband is allowing it to happen!!! OK I digress.
There was a very interesting post months ago that was a writing by a womens group that didn't want women to get the vote. They, like my wife, were very willing to not vote to keep the vote out of the hands of the rest of the women in the country. Their foresight was very interesting.
In my opinion
