ITHACA--According to the Ithaca Journal, the former aerobics instructor/Democrat who Ithacans voted their Mayor recently has named a new police chief.
To the surprise of absolutely no one who knows how Ithaca operates, Mayor Carolyn Peterson passed over the popular and highly qualified John Beau Saul to appoint Lauren Signer, the controversal former "Acting Chief" to the post.
Signer spent much of her tenure in that position attending topless protests and was accused of assaulting a resident during a roadside incident, resulting in a $1.25 million lawsuit being filed.
However, Signer also has a history of suing for sex discrimination, so her appointment to the post was probably a fait acompli...especially in the most liberal city in America.
This doesn't shock me in the least. Socialism.

What that would be like looking for qualifications. Such logical employment screening practices are only practiced by heartless conservatives such as myself.
No the standard for employment was probably her record of attending protest marches, diversity training, etc.
They're really out of control in Ithaca. They will eventually reap what they sow

Ithaca is host to two colleges, Cornell University (aptly nick-named "the Big Red") and Ithaca College (which flies the gay flag over its campus), the two major employers in the area. They ensure that a disproportionate amount of "ivory tower liberals" dominate the city.
This was obvious from the moment that the mayor and her staff exploited the loophole that permitted them to use last year's civil service eligibility list. The only reason to use that list was to reach Signer. The other candidates were never in the race. Only one of the folks did not pass this year's civil service exam and she is the new chief. I think it would have been nice if the mayor had just announced her decision when she decided to use the old list rather that pretend she was considering public input....no surprise that Lauren Signer had been selected as the new Ithaca police chief.
Funny, however, a letter writer had to point out the shenanigans with the civil service test, instead of the local journalists.
