Californians Dreaming of Secession?
CNSNEWS.com ^ | 1/11/05 | Susan Jones

(CNSNews.com) - California could cut taxes, fully fund education and balance its budget by seceding from the United States, a newly organized group says.

The Committee to Explore California Secession, also known as Move On California, says it hopes to bring people together to consider the merits of an autonomous and independent California.

Those benefits would be both financial and political: "For every dollar Californians give to the federal government we see only 78-cents come back," the group's website says. It also expresses concern about "the diminishing voice of Californians in national politics" and "national trends that are tipping the balance in the direction of the religious conservative agenda."

[Contrary to what Move On California claims, California Republicans now chair six U.S. House committees, giving California more congressional clout than any other state, Fox News reported.]

Jeff Morrissette, the founder of Move On California, says the secession buzz began shortly after the November 2004 re-election of President Bush. But, he says, politicians from both parties object to subsidizing other states at a time "when those California tax dollars could be better spent at home to shore up our own fiscal problems."

According to Morrissette, if Californians could control the $40 billion that goes to pork barrel spending projects in other states every year, they could give state taxpayers a $20-billion tax cut and still have enough money to fully fund California spending priorities, specifically education, and balance the budget at the same time.

Morrissette says momentum is building for the California secession movement. "While secession may be a long-shot," he says, "it will succeed in bringing awareness to many of the grievances California has politically, socially and fiscally."

"Californians are getting pushed around and it's time we pushed back," he said.

If California secedes from the union, I say Nevada should cut off their Hoover Dam electricity and let them all sit in the dark at night.

Agreed. There's a whole host rights in our Constitution that our "enlightened" government chooses to ignore. This is certainly one of them.

and too......people confuse democrats with activist liberals per se.......yes more dems here but outside of SF and LA they are alot more conservative.......we passed prop 187 against illegal alien benefits and marriage between a man and a woman.......if we were all consumed with "liberals", this would not have happend......there are actually several states more liberal than Calif like NY, Mass, and especially Illinois.........check the voting pattern

Without tax and spend California Democrats in the House and Senate, the US could balance its budget without California, too.

Uh, the GOP controls the government now, and spending is higher than ever. Let's face it, our boys let us down, and are just happy to be in charge of all the pork now.

Hey! Wait a minute! I thought that California was liberal, and don't liberals want to give, give, give, and pay their taxes for the good of others? So what's the big problem that such a fat, rich state such as California isn't getting back every dime it gives?

Don't secede, just break up the state into several smaller states. We can use the additional Senators in Congress.

So "the people" of Cobb County can secede from Georgia?

Perhaps. Killington voted to secede from Vermont. http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/Northeast/03/02/killington.secession.ap/

i would agree some very whacko lib ideas come out of Calif but we still are the biggest innovaters in tech and largest producers of food stuffs in the nation.......hell, most of the innovations in football at least on offense came out of Calif.........many of you are kind of ignorant on Calif as a whole just spouting off from what you know from the news and such......you are generalizing from small specific events and I only thought the Dems used emotion instead of rational

How about make California into 2 states?? It's already too big to govern. Make the coastal areas one state and the inner region the other state. It would divide the conservative part from the more liberal part. The coastal, liberal part of the state would be bigger. (But don't forget that nearly 45% of Californians voted for Bush)

"A little further research is needed but it could very well be that 50 states seceding from Washington, D. C. would save them all considerable money."

That would be an interesting move. Create another union of States and a new federal government. Maybe we can get it right this time.

I can see it now. "We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union . . . . "

Cut off SF and LA. Problem solved.

We need an East California and a West California. The west comprised of the coastal cities and all their liberal agendas.

We have North and South Dakota, North and South Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia, so it seems feasible. As it is today, we in the red counties (the vast majority of the state) are held hostage to the liberals concentrated in urban areas and as such, are subject to "taxation without representation". Our two U.S. senators do not represent approximately 3/4 of the state and this has gone on long enough.

And I guess the Colorado River compact goes in the garbage too. I'd like to see my fellow Californians proposing this survive without water.

but that is just ludicrous........you attack Calif cause it is huge and the libs here stand out like sore thumbs but the Dems are not all activist libs.........point in fact, cause you attack Calif cause it is fun for you.......but why don't you attack the Eastern states that are more overwhelming liberal than us.........Illinois and NY come to mind......the percentage of dem votes from these states was higher than in Calif
