Just the continuation of a very, very long campaign to denigrate Southrons as stupid, low class, unworthies who had the unmitigated gall to challenge the all-knowing, all-powerful, feds. Read BORN FIGHTING by James Webb for a good explanation. There are many other books which are just beginning to tell the truth about the war for southern independence, for example, THE REAL LINCOLN, by DiLorenzo.

Where I live the judges take pride in quick trials. On my most recent call for jury duty the judge even made the comment to the jury that this wasn't a "California Court".
One of the jurors tried to use the excuse on Monday that she had to go to a funeral on Wednesday, and the judge said if the trial were still going on Wednesday there would be more than one funeral.

The few decent jurors who show up are bounced right away by the plaintiff's attorney with their preemptory challenges.
Just how many peremptory (not "preemptory") challenges do they get? And don't you get the same amount?

What is newsworthy about this piece?
I recently did some jury duty. The jury pool here in Oakland County, MI far surpasses this group.
I was astonsished at what these people had to say. And to think the could be standing next to you.

First, jury duty is slavery.
Second, anyone who is intelligent and productive will tend to have good motivation to duck service.
Third, if Voir Dire challenges were eliminated (except for the things that require a judge to be recused, such as knowing one of the parties) then intelligent and productive people would be willing to show up and actually serve, instead of being kicked off.
Fourth, in civil litigation, the jury should be paid by the litigants according to the jobs they are giving up. Millions for the lawyers, but car fare for the jurors.

'Do you believe in the death penalty?'
'I didn't mean to kill him, honest!'
'No, no, no. You're on the JURY!. Try to remember that.'

Just how many peremptory (not "preemptory") challenges do they get? And don't you get the same amount?LOL -I can't believe I spelled that wrong. The number of challenges depends on the Judge, type of case, etc...The problem is if each side only gets 5 it's usually enough to knock out the jurors with steady jobs and a cursory education. Hence, the outrageous verdicts.

Although I have never had a jury like this one, this is the direct result of smart, intelligent, hardworking people ducking jury duty. Bump. I am always mad when I hear people trying to find way to avoid their duty. The system will only work if the people do their part.

Well, the defendant WAS from a trailer park and he IS entitled to a jury of his peers, so what the heck is the problem? ;-)
