April 2 - During the presidential campaign, Mary Matalin helped craft Dick Cheneys potent words. Now, her new Simon & Schuster imprint will give voice to the rest of the conservative crowd, starting with the vice presidents daughter. Matalin will publish a memoir by Mary Cheney, whose homosexuality became an issue in the election, next year. NEWSWEEKs Susannah Meadows talked to Matalin, the Republican pundit and wife of fiery Democratic strategist James Carville, about her new role as editor. Excerpts:
NEWSWEEK: What else do you hope to publish?
Mary Matalin: My particular interest is in foreign policy and national security, stories like Marys, other books from the campaign. It will be a place for contemporary conservatism. Were on a conservative continuum. Liberalism is dead. They can be in denial. That is not where its going. And Id like to know where its going.
Is the idea [of the new imprint] to be in place for the next few years when members of the Bush administration will probably start leaving to write books?
I do have a sort of "If you build it they will come mentality." And these guys are all my friends. Im a natural comfort zone. My other life is still as an extended family member.
As a longtime advisor to Dick Cheney, you must have been instrumental in signing Mary Cheney.
[Simon and Schuster] did compete for Mary, but I stayed out of that. If they want to come, theyll come. Im not going to go in there and hustle. I bring a Rolodex. But I loathe imposing on my friends. Im just as interested in formative ideas of the Reagan administration as well as new ideas.

It might be nice to think liberalism is dead but if that were really true then we wouldn't be fighting tooth and nail against liberals on every single issue.
Dracula was dead too, but he wreaked a lot of havoc.
I agree. It would be so nice if liberalism was dead, but it isn't true, and we need to keep fighting them at every turn.
"Even though [David Rosenthal is] a crazy lefty nut, were good friends."
And even though James Carville is a crazy lefty nut, she married him.
Liberal friends are one thing; I can't imagine a liberal husband.
Brains! We need BRAINS!!!
"Liberal friends are one thing; I can't imagine a liberal husband."
No kidding! How she tolerates Carville, much less made a couple of kids with him, is beyond me.
Maybe it's Carville's good looks.:^)
IMHO, the ONLY mistake they have made is the logo: the brass made them put a lantern in the "Sentinel'S" hand instead of a musket!!
"Liberalism is dead"? If it is dead why do we have to put up a fight every election yr?
Liberalism is far from dead. Conservatives are getting their voices heard more than ever, but liberals still control the courts, acedemics and more, PC is alive and well, there is still a graduated income tax, social security is maybe going to be "reformed", not killed. Christians on juries result in mistrials, treason committed by Democrats results in a slap on the wrist while Martha Stewert is sent to jail for a non-treasonous lie..............etc
I also agree. I don't think liberalism will ever die. Liberalism thrives on envy and sloth, and there will always be plenty of voters who are driven by these baser instincts.
Peej, check this out...
LOL!
We need to stop thinking of the Left as "Liberals". Michael Moore believes the Sharia-Staters are the Minutemen. There's nothing liberal about that. They need a new name.
I don't think any one off author is defining. If Conservatism has a guiding voice it eludes me.
