Fourth bomber, 19, the boss
Sydney Morning Herald ^ | July 17, 2005 | By Peter Munro and Audrey Gillan in London

The 19-year-old suicide bomber responsible for the Kings Cross explosion, known as the "fourth man", is thought to have played a key co-ordinating role in the London bus and Tube terrorist atrocities that killed 55 people.

Anti-terrorist detectives now believe Jermaine Lindsay or Lindsay Jamal, who changed his name to Abdullah Shaheed Jamal when he converted to Islam, may have been the most senior of the four bombers.

Details about Jamal's role in the bombing came as Britain buried its first bombing victim - a beautiful young Muslim who bore the name of the religion in whose misguided service the terrorists struck 10 days ago.

The family of Shahara Islam, 20, described her as "an innocent and bloodstained martyr".

Pakistani authorities have questioned several students, teachers and administrators at one of two religious schools believed visited by a suspect in the London bombings.

Intelligence officials said agents had been dispatched to the Jamia Manzoorul Islam seminary in central Lahore, one of two religious schools allegedly visited by 22-year-old suspected bomber Shehzad Tanweer on a visit to Pakistan. AdvertisementAdvertisement

Asad Farooq, a spokesman for the school, said: "Our hands are clean. We are not involved in any such activities. We are simply running an education facility."

The British Government has declared war on extremist Muslim clerics who preach the "evil ideology" of terrorism and make martyrs of suicide bombers. Those found guilty of "endorsing or glorifying" terrorist attacks such as the July 7 London bombings could face prison under the raft of new anti-terrorism offences.

British Prime Minister Tony Blair will also hold talks with Muslim leaders on Tuesday on combating the local extremism, especially among Muslim youth, that helped to spawn the suicide bombers.

One of those men, Mohammad Sidique Khan, the 30-year-old Edgeware Road bomber who killed seven people, visited the Houses of Parliament in July last year as the guest of a Labour MP. It has also emerged that Tanweer, 22, who murdered seven in a blast on a train near Liverpool Street station, reportedly met a member of a group linked to al-Qaeda during a visit to Pakistan in 2003.

Police in Faisalabad said on Friday that four suspects had been detained in connection with the bombings.

Those arrested include the head of an Islamic religious school where Tanweer first made contact with al-Qaeda figures.

Jamal, a convert who was raised in Huddersfield, northern England, but born in Jamaica, is believed to have had the connections that made the terrorist operation possible.

It is known that the three other bombers travelled from Leeds to London via Luton just outside London. After they detonated their devices further bombs were found at Luton station in Jamal's red Fiat car.

Investigators believe there may be significance in the fact that the group travelled to meet Jamal in Luton rather than going directly to London.

Authorities are also trying to establish whether the devices left behind in Jamal's car were intended for other suicide bombers to use on this or on future missions.

Unconfirmed newspaper reports say Jamal also spent time at Brixton mosque in south London with Richard Reid, the Muslim convert jailed after trying to blow up an airliner with a bomb in his shoe in 2001.

A knowledgeable source said: "There is no doubt that he [Jamal] was a main player. He moved around a lot and seemed to have the contacts. But his movements themselves throw up a lot more questions. Piece by piece we are putting this together."

Close the mosques if the mullahs and immams are teaching jihad. Then confiscate the property and resell it using the money to reciprocate for the bombings.

I heard a report on TV in Aussie land that the police believed they had the head of the bomber on the bus.

"I was reading in a Brit newspaper that the police were 'not yet prepared to call it a suicide bombing'"

To clarify, there is no doubt that the men carrying the bombs actually died in the blasts. This statement was in regard to whether this was what they intended to do.

"Suicide bomber is a misnomer. Since their mission is to kill others, they should be called homicide bombers."

Never seen the point of that construction, it doesn't seem to say anything. How do you distinguish between a homicide bomber who intends to kill himself in his act and a homicide bomber who leaves a bomb to explode later and escapes?

Yes, that is how I also understood their meaning.

Fox News started this "homicide bomber" nonsense. One senses the journos feel stuck with the idiocy.

Hey, Roger Ailes, the word "bomber" implies homicide. Let your journos speak proper English.

I'd be looking for the other 'martyrs' who chickened-out.

Or, they didn't KNOW they were on a suicide mission,

I heard on the radio that the bombers had purchased round trip tickets. Now, how they know that is byond me, but, there was speculation that the guys may not have known that they were on suicide missions.

The fourth device failed to detonate at the set time, the fourth bomber was turned away by security, he got on the bus and THEN realized he was NOT in control of the timing mechanism, he going to die and panic set in, but it was too late...

Yeah, the whole bus thing is strange, some reports stated a guy was " fumbling" with his backpack prior to the bus blast. If he "chickened out" or was having second thoughts, why didn't he just ditch the backpack?

Well the police have CCTV of the bombers at Luton railway station, so I imagine that they can synchronise that with records of tickets sold at that exact time.

"How do you distinguish between a homicide bomber who intends to kill himself in his act and a homicide bomber who leaves a bomb to explode later and escapes?"

There is no distinction between the two. The intent of both acts is to kill others, not himself. Thus, the bomber is on an homicide mission, irrespective of whether he kills himself or not. Someone who goes out to kill another person commits an homicide. If, in doing so, he intenionally kills himself, yes, he would have committed a suicide, but that is collateral to the actual intent of the act, ie, to kill others. If, otoh, in his mission he inadvertently kills himself, he hasn't committed a suicide since there was no intent of killing himself, and the act is strictly an homicide.

And that's my peonistic take. I ain't no lawyer.

"but the mastermind, not wanting to be identified if they survived and were caught, set the timers much earlier than they believed"

Sounds familiar.

15. I will never employ any device with a digital countdown. If I find that such a device is absolutely unavoidable, I will set it to activate when the counter reaches 117 and the hero is just putting his plan into operation.

I just heard on the news that the authorities found nine more bombs in that vehicle they seized in Luton. Sounds like the young men were planning to come back and place more bombs but the mastermind had other plans.

Lesson to all young Muslim men: If somebody asks you to transport and place a bomb, ask him what happened to the last guy who transported and placed a bomb for him.

It's possible it had a fail-safe that detonated it on any attempt to remove the backpack
