The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.
Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."
Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."
Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.
He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.
Many of us have put "two and two" together, and yet others have chosen to ignore these simple facts. I am dismayed that FR seems to have so many posters right now that seem to be void of compassion for these people
The poverty level in NO has also been well-documented and the poor folks did not own vehicles and had to depend on mass transit. I wonder how many buses it would have taken to help these people evacuate, and did any of the buses even try, by offering free rides for the poor people's families?
This is, in microcosm, a glorious study in the appeasement of terror. Had lawful authority made a highly visible show of force at the onset of all this, much of this violence and idiocy would have been avoided.
The entire NOPD needs to be gutted and rebuilt from scratch.

Residents? The tourist couple I heard was trying to leave and there was no transportation. I'm sorry for the poor. Without money, there's nowhere to go and no way to get there.

Carr said he has remained in contact via the Internet with friends in New Orleans, many of them police and rescue workers.
"A lot of policemen are dead," Carr said. "They sent the second shift home Sunday night and told them to just come back for the regular shift the next day. The officers were text messaging that they were trapped in their homes."
FEMA Director Mike Brown said on CNN today that the request from the state of Louisiana for assistance at the New Orleans convetion center came this afternoon. He said they are responding and that trucks are on the way.
Not hardly. First, the NG doesn't just stand around waiting for it to rain. There are about 3800 Louisiana NG troops on duty in various places. There are 8000 NG and AR available in the state with 10,000 coming from out of state.
How do you know they don't have enough helicopters to do the job? If you need to move 100,000 people in 24 hours there aren't enough helicopters anywhere. If they need additional helicopters I'm sure they asked for them and they'll be there as soon as possible.

I figure that the "core of evil" of NOLA has set themselves up as rulers of the city and are probably holding court in the convention center. Recommend that this cabal be broken up as soon as possible.

I had to stop in the middle of the night going through NO to get gas once. The lady at the gas station behind the bullet proof gas looked at me and said in a worried voice, glancing around, "You need to hurry back to your car, NOW". I felt like wolves would come out of the shadows and ran back to my car, locked it and never looked back at NO.

And your degree in mechanical engineering is from what college? Helicopters repairing levees is a desperate hail-mary pass. Levee failure is fast amd complete in many cases. There are hundreds of miles of them around N.0. There was no way to do what you suggest, especially in 40mph - 140mph winds. The fault lies with the the ubelievably bad job that the City Government did in disaster planning. If they knew the Superdome was going to be refuge of last resort it should have been hardened to make it so. Public Transportation should have been used to evac the poor days before the order was given.
The mayor should be prosecuted for criminal negligence. The Governor is not much better. If it is true that the National Guard do not have authority or means (bullets) to put down rioting due to her squeamishness that is pathetic and she is a pathetic fool. Feds and FEMA always take 48 hours to arrive. I was 10 miles from Loma Preita when it cracked and it was a lot longer than that before I saw FEMA people. It is always to city and state agencies who own planning and execution of emergency measures. The incompetents in LA failed badly, and thousands died as a result.

Heard on Fox News that in Baton Rouge at the shelter they were requesting "child friendly" movies and DVD's for the kids to watch.
