Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
AP ^ | 1-Sept-2005 | AP

Posted on 09/01/2005 2:49:12 PM PDT by Fitzcarraldo

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

Who are these so called "men " commiting crimes down there. a REAL man would be helping women and children and nOT thinking of themselves. There was a time in this country when good men would rise to the occasion and be MEN. These are the gansta generation , half animals. They are the onse always playing the "tough guy " role and bitching about "respect" .Not a real man among them . I repeat , shoot a couple of the bums and let the word spread or else NO will be even more of a jungle then it was in those neighborhoods.

The "battle reports" comming from New Orleans do not sound typical of criminal activity, not at all, criminal do not stand and fight law enforcement, they run. These sounds much more organized and much more determined, of cousre it could all be hype and not true, but if there are "units" standing and fighting law enforcement then I would be incliuned to think terrorists cells, or wanta be terrorists.

You have posted this thought several times.

I strongly supect you are desperately trying to deflect the blame from where it belongs.

I was under the impression the government had been planning for this type of situation ever since (and maybe before) 9-11. It appears their plans suck, to put it mildly. The entire rescue of New Orleans stopped by a couple of gang bangers with guns? Did not plan for gang bangers with guns? What's up with that? We have been repeatedly told that worse far worse then 9-11 was coming, well here it is, where the plan? It appears to me that the only damn plan was to ask Texas if Texas has a plan.

I think it is on city/state officials to have a disaster plan.

Exactly! It was simply a matter of time. Look at the popular mechanics prophecy from a previous post. Original article Sept 11 2001 http://www.popularmechanics.com/science/research/1282151.html

I'm a proud son of the south. Your snide comment really deserved no response. I know not where you reside, nor do I care. If you've not been to the south, you've no idea what southern hospitality is.

I resent pompous asses with provincial views regarding the south.

Your comment was not funny, so don't go on the circuit.

They can't leave. They are suffering. Some are dying. They have tried to maintain order for themselves, but they are reaching a breaking point.

I'm not being a smart*s but why can't they leave? Can't they walk out of the city? Just asking.

It's just a big a disgrace because men are acting like animals and gangstas instead of like real men in a crisis. There was a time in America when this wouldn't have happened this way. We have a culture of low life , ignorant criminals in every urban area across the country .

I read in an article that the crime rate in NO is 10 TIMES the national average. That will explain a lot of what is going on.

It always made the top 10 list for violent crime. It has better PR, but a trip to New Orleans is like a trip to Detroit as far as crime goes. The relatively safe area in the French Quarter for tourists was roughly from the River to a block beyond Bourbon St, and from Canal to Jackson square. In daylight you could move a little farther down river on the river side of the Quarter. Across Canal, the River Center was the only area where I would walk after dark.

I have been convinced for the time being that I was wrong in suspecting terrorists, folks with first hand experience have assured me this is very typical gang behavor. So I am off the terrorist thing until there is real evidence of a connection.

I agree with you 100%. Rural living is safer during natural or man-made disasters.

Yeah, many are uncomfortable, but they are far, far away from eating eachother to stay alive.

The main concern is dehydration. I saw the report from the convention center--the guy said in a disgusted voice that they're breaking into stores to get "chips and candy." So those people are getting some liquids, probably.

It seems to me, though, that it's only those strong enough to go out and loot that are subsisting. I did see one elderly lady's body in a wheelchair at the CC. Some in there willl die of dehydration as time passes, especially considering the heat.

I think the water level is still where it was, impassable in places, so the people who are stranded on rooftops or other isolated places who can't wade through the water who will perish very soon if they get nothing to drink.

If that's the case, then this might be a GOOD time.

"These people ARE NOT AT THE SUPERDOME. They are at the CONVENTION CENTER."

My mistake. I haven't actually seen any live coverage of the Convention Center.

He's trying to make us believe terrorists are doing this, so his pals won't get stereotyped or something.
