Police Chief Says Thousands Trapped in New Orleans Convention Center
AP ^ | 1-Sept-2005 | AP

Posted on 09/01/2005 2:49:12 PM PDT by Fitzcarraldo

The New Orleans police chief says 15-thousand people are trapped in the city's convention center. And he says some are being raped and beaten.

Chief Eddie Compass says displaced tourists are "walking in that direction and they are getting preyed upon."

Compass said he sent eight eleven-man teams into the convention center. But as soon as the first team arrived, he said, "they were beaten back within 30 feet of the entrance."

Earlier, the city's mayor issued a "desperate SOS" on behalf of the thousands who are stranded at the convention center.

He also gave the go-ahead for them to march across a bridge to a dry area of the city and look for whatever relief they could find.

"Execution for drug dealers."

That would be a massive over-reaction. Look at what would happen when the next corrupt Democrat president or governor wants to get rid of somebody: he'd get a corrupt AG and some corrupt drug enforcement agents to plant drugs on the person he wants to imprison or execute. A couple years later that person is on death row or forced to plead guilty to avoid a death sentence. The law can also be used to oppress political opponents.

Execution for meth dealers/manufacturers. It'd be a kindness to them and everyone else. They've given up their humanity.

Using your logic, since every law can be abused, there should be no laws or punishments whatsoever. I don't agree.

It's akin to the logic of "people will do drugs/have abortions/commit murder anyway, so no use having laws against such things.

Its very sectional. Riverdale is all wealthy Jewish people who live in mansions and expensive apartments built in the 1920's. Hunt's Point is still a mess. Morris Park is still alot Italian/American. Woodlawn is still Irish/American.

It takes only a few gangstas to scare the multitude.

I certainly hope the hellhole at the Convention Center is the President's first stop tomorrow. He needs to see how FEMA's rescue operation is going, and I can't think of a better place to see it. Someone needs to move the dead old woman in the wheelchair by the door though, because it will make for a poor photo op.

I wonder why there wasn't more of this in Lower Manhattan after 9-11?

I heard a high ranking person with the LA state police say the troublemakers are three gangs that are always causing trouble in N.O.

Just getting back into the thread.

Right off the bat I'd say FEMA and subsequently President Bush will be tarred and...no...make that drawn and quartered over the "slow" response in trying to keep those people alive.

They should have been delivering water and food in some coordinated fashion by now.

If the facts are that it's because of gangs of mauraders have stolen heavy weaponry, then we have a domestic terrorist situation.

The longer the situation remains where no control exists, the bad publicity for the Administration.

OTOH, the longer it festers, it speaks..no screams volumns about the calamity of liberalism and the Louisiana welfare class.

"Using your logic, since every law can be abused, there should be no laws or punishments whatsoever."

I said no such thing and that is not my logic. I said that execution was an over-reaction, an excessive punishment, for drug dealing and such an extreme punishment would give corrupt drug enforcement agents too much power. There's always a correct balance between insufficient and excessive punishment for a crime. I never said there should be no punishment for drug dealing or that punishment should be reduced. You have every right to disagree with me, but please make a coherent argument and don't try to twist my words around into something I never said.

"Scary how the liberal media is burying the fact that there is a hostage situation in the convention center. God knows what they are doing to the female tourists they are holding"

I bet they women being raped are white women. It is another way the racist blacks get revenge on white people.

"There are not enough troops because they are all being sucked into the Iraq quagmire. Heck, they don't even have enough helicopters in NO to do the job. Too many in Iraq."

Good thing too, as my brother is safer in Iraq than he would be in New Orleans.

This is the predominately black urban thug culture that many celebrate...unleashed on the innocent of all races stuck down there.

Another plausable (at least to me) scenario is that these are freed convicts who are predominately black and majority muslim.

This sorry event could be a bonanza for the GOP and Conservatism.

They should, but it's kind of hard when the monsters within the population you are trying to rescue keep shooting at the food deliverers.

If this is the real reason, why is it blacked out in the media?

I agree - I exaggerated your position. But in a sense, your position is that execution would be excessive BECAUSE of the potential for abuse.

Okay, public caning/beating for drug dealing, additional stripes for additional offenses.

Public pain and public shame will do wonders. Even the retired head DA for this county agreed with me. Before he recently retired. Off the record, of course.

I remember pre-Katrina video of some young Aussie tourists, male and female, cheerfully lining up to enter the Superdome for shelter.

I'll bet they are less cheerful today, especially the girls.
