I would prefer that the speculation and jockeying over Rehnquist's replacement wait until Roberts is confirmed.

Prediction: The president announces his associate justice pick tonight, when he returns to D.C. from the Katrina-ravaged area. It will be a strong message highlighting his desire to get the process rolling with speed. The vetting has all happened on the White House side, they went through candidates before the Roberts-as-associate-justice announcement. An announcement about the other opening tonight would make a lot of sense. And any crassness concerns — nominating someone before Rehnquist is even buried — seem to be mute with the announcement of Roberts as his chief pick already.

Wow. Owens sounds very much like O'Connor.
Too many scumbag Democrats seem to like her and that scares me.
She's an excellent judge, but she's only been in her current position for a very short time. Same with Janice Rogers Brown. Let them make records on the Federal Bench, and then nominate them in the future.
Many other Supreme Justices were in similar conditions, in the past. She is also in the middle of her life, and this fact is very important...
(There has only been one Texan on the Court to date, the awful Tom Clark, father of Ramsey Clark...Truman later said that picking Clark was his biggest mistake as President. LBJ made Ramsey Clark Attorney General in part to force Tom Clark to resign from the Supreme Court.)
O'Connor was Texan, too.
I would be impressed with a nomination from the following (order of preference):
1) Brown
2) Garza
3) Estrada
4) Clement
It is unlikely that Bush will name another white male. Not that there is anything wrong with it. Just unlikely.
That's the order I'd like to see, too. Owens doesn't strike me as forceful enough to do the job, and she could well be another O'Connor.

No, O'Conner is from Arizona, like Rehnquist. She also graduated in the same law school class at Stanford (Rehnquist was #1, O'Connor was #3).
Perhaps. Luttig is the best choice amongst his list IMO.
Isn't Clement an abortion supporter?
