Robert Novak reports Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) "has informed" Majority Leader Bill Frist (R-TN) "that Federal Appeals Court Judge Priscilla Owen will be filibustered if President Bush names her to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court.
"Republican senators are divided on whether former Texas Supreme Court Justice Owen is vulnerable because she underwent a filibuster for the appellate seat and was confirmed under the compromise agreement. Frist is known to believe Owen can be confirmed in the face of a filibuster.
"Republican Senate strategists believe Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is the only possible Bush nominee to replace O'Connor who would not face a filibuster."
The AP says President Bush "extended invitations Friday to key Senate leaders to meet at the White House next week to discuss" the O'Connor's spot on the bench.
Agreed. This is no time to nominate a "moderate." Keep our eyes on the prize. Getting more rock-ribbed conservatives on the Supreme Court is vital. Stay consistent: No Moderates!.
Rudy Guiliani has my endorsement for President in '08 if he takes the No Moderates pledge. He can win the election. Folks say he's not far enough to the right to win the nomination, but let him sign The Pledge and we will see.
Surely.
While most Americans had no real understanding of the fight over district judges, they understand full well what a Supreme Court Justice means to this country.
They will not stand still for vicious hate rhetoric and grandstanding against a black woman nominated to the Court.
Which, in and of itself, is sufficient proof that Gonzales should NOT be nominated to the position.
You know, I don't know about that, the blacks are in their camp lock, stock and barrel, so they jump on a black woman BUSH wants on the court, that is as bad as Bush selecting himself.
Reid is a first class POS. Who gives a flying what he says or thinks. He should be in a room with padded walls
Bush is not scared. And don't call me Surely.
There is nothing else left for the rodents to do.
JRB would be wonderful. The Drats would go apoplectic.
The Dems will wheel them(Ginsberg, Stevens) in on life-support... until Bush leaves office. Should they drop dead... they'll hire imposters.
You say, "Reid had a minor stroke shortly after John Roberts was nominated to the Supreme Court."
Fortunately, Reid has very little brain tissue so he should have no after-effects.
I for one don't give a flying rats butt if the filibuster, but make them DO a REAL filibuster, not the spineless Republican way where they let business continue but take no action on nominees.
I still would nominate Estrada. Hispanic male, nothing on him, just like with Roberts and the Republicans have Kennedys memos to back up the hit job they pulled on him.
We should be gaining more support with the hispanic community anyway. This will scare the bejeezus out of California and other states which are blue with growing hispanic populations. Also helps the Republicans with dealing with illegal immigration.
Brown is a good choice. Estrada is a perfect choice.
They would filibuster Kermit the Freakin' Frog. Bring it on, you dirtbags!
"Go ahead Reid, you punk,... make my day!"
While I love Janice Rogers Brown and she's currently the one I am pushing on my blog.
Luttig has been a federal judge for 14 years. Janice Rogers Brown, while she has been a State Supreme Court Justice (California) she has no federal experience, and the #1 thing we fear in any judge is that they will "grow in office"
Plus she was rated as slightly less conservative than the average appellate judge by an analysis by Judicature, the PDF file is linked in #13
Heck, if they'll (try) to filibuster Owen we should go with a better pick (one they'll hate even more) like:
Edith Jones
Janice Rogers Brown
Michael Luttig
Michael McConnell
Emilio Garza.
These Republicans need to each grow a pair and start enjoying the advantages of majority. They were elected for a reason and it wasn't to just spend our money like drunken democrats. Get busy!
He called these same people in before nominating Roberts. Took ther "advice" then told them to take a hike and nominated Roberts. I suspect he will do the same and nominate who HE wants.
